Camp Erin Indianapolis

Camp Erin Indianapolis Camp Erin Children have an opportunity to address their feelings and memorialize their loved ones. http://www.moyerfoundation.org/programs/camperin_about.aspx

Camp Erin, created and funded by The Moyer Foundation, is the largest nationwide network of free bereavement camps for children and teens ages 6-17 who have experienced the death of someone close to them

It is a weekend-long experience filled with traditional, fun, camp activities combined with grief education and emotional support -- facilitated by grief professionals and trained volunteers. At

Camp Erin, children are comforted knowing that there are other children who have experienced similar situations and understand exactly what they are feeling. They are provided with the tools and resources needed during and after camp, including memories and friendships that last long after camp is complete.

Tis the season to be jolly…or, so they say. For those who have experienced the death of a loved one, this season tends to solicit a different reaction altogether. So, how can you and your family find joy and comfort during the holidays this year?

Be open: Have a family meeting and encourage open communication. Don’t pretend that nothing has changed or will change after the death of a loved one.

Be prepared: Consider possible triggers for grief bursts. Help the child identify his or her own personal fears or concerns.

Be supportive: Talk about ways to support each other when needed. Have a key word, symbol or physical sign that indicates a need for a hug, a listening ear, space or even a need to do something fun.

Be intentional: Accept that feelings will rollercoaster during the holiday season and be intentional about taking care of yourself and encouraging children to take care of themselves, too. Make time to reflect, reminisce, process and memorialize your loved one.

Be reminiscent: Light a candle, share memories and pictures in a family journal, or watch your loved one’s favorite movie.
