Have you spotted the tree swallows swooping around the Parade Grounds lately? They are absolutely everywhere right now and it is one of the coolest things to watch! This time of year tree swallows gather in large flocks to fuel up before their journey south, a behavior called premigratory staging. Open grassland habitats like the Parade Grounds are exactly the kind of place they rely on to find the insects they need to build up enough energy for the trip. They typically head out late August through September making their way down to the Gulf Coast for the winter. 🪶

If you have not had a chance to go watch them do yourself a favor and swing by before they are gone for the season. It is really something special!

Fencing is officially down at South Beach, our last active site of the season. We were waiting on two Least Tern chicks to fledge, and now they’re flying! This means our shorebird monitoring season on island has officially wrapped up! Woohoo!

South Beach is such a beloved spot for a morning dog walk, and we know the fencing wasn’t always easy to work around. Thank you to everyone who gave these birds space and kept dogs leashed while nesting season was underway! It made a difference for these families this season.

Grateful for a community that shows up for its shorebirds. See you again next spring! 🐣

If you missed The Extraordinary Caterpillar at Nature Day, we’re showing it again this Sunday, August 23rd at 6:00 PM at the Movie Theater! 🐛

This film by Jeff McKay, presented with Homegrown National Park, takes a look into the world of caterpillars and moths, featuring Doug Tallamy, Sam Jaffee, and David Wagner. It’s a fun, close up look at some of nature’s smallest and most important creatures.

Free entry, donations welcome. Join us Sunday at the theater! 🐛

We have an unwelcome guest! A spotted lanternfly was found (and killed!) on island. Likely one of the first confirmed sightings here. This invasive insect feeds on a wide range of trees and plants, so it can seriously stress or damage the ones growing right in your own yard, and it spreads fast by hitching rides on cars, boats, and equipment.

One reason it may have found its way here is Tree-of-Heaven, an invasive plant already present on the island and one of its favorite hosts. Removing Tree-of-Heaven from your property is one of the best things you can do to help keep this pest from taking hold.

Visit our website to learn how to identify both and how to report a sighting.

The FI Fire Dept. was notified about a lobster clambake fire left smoldering, with trash left behind at the site.
Carry in, carry out isn't just a nice idea. It's what keeps our beaches safe and clean for everyone who uses them.
Please make sure fires are fully out and take everything you bring with you!

Saturday was our annual Nature Day, and what a turnout! 🌿☀️
We had Denison Pequotsepos Nature Center with live animals, our FIRST team sharing their research, Michele’s marine debris exhibit, FISM and our Sentinel program. The movie theater hosted a screening of The Extraordinary Caterpillar, Billy and the FI Market kept everyone fueled with breakfast, and Robin’s ice cream truck is always a hit! 🍦We missed Mystic Aquarium this year, but they’ll be back next year!

Thank you to everyone who made it possible, and to everyone who came out with curious minds. We had such a great time seeing our community out and about💚

Join us on Friday, August 7th at 5:30 PM at the Fishers Island Movie Theater for a special evening with Guido Rahr, President and CEO of the Wild Salmon Center!

Guido will share the remarkable story of wild salmon, the challenges they face, and why protecting healthy rivers and forests matters not just for salmon, but for local ecosystems and wildlife. His presentation will be followed by a screening of Running Wild: Return to the River, a film narrated by Liam Neeson that follows one of nature’s most incredible migrations.

This free program welcomes all. We hope you’ll join us for an inspiring evening exploring one of the world’s greatest conservation stories!
