From the work of Walt Whitman onward, the lyric poem has been a mainstay in American poetry. This workshop will focus on the components to composing a good lyric poem: a defined sense of place, an original narrative voice, and an embrace of the joy to be found in life's daily experiences. Through a series of specific prompts, we will spend the week writing, sharing, and discussing our poems in a welcoming, engaging seminar environment. $350.

How are writers selected for residencies at Write On? Founding and Artistic Director Jerod Santek explains.

PANEL PICKS WRITE ON RESIDENTS

Earlier this summer, Write On, Door County’s residency board had the difficult task of reviewing a record 187 applications for writers’ residencies in 2027.

Thirty writers were recommended for residencies, with another 18 named finalists. The board strongly advocated for offering fewer residencies at longer stays. Writers can request anywhere from a week to four weeks to spend at the Juddville campus to focus on their art.

Write On’s 59 acres of meadows, old orchards and hardwood forest provide a peaceful and inspirational location for writers to work. The intimate residency program allows no more than three writers-in-residence at a time, so new writing friendships can develop, or writer friends can apply together.

The Power of the Pen shone through at our 2026 fundraising gala! Thank you to all our generous guests, donors, and sponsors. You showed firsthand how the written word can make a lasting impact: from auction items combining Door County artwork with ekphrastic writing, to poetry read aloud during cocktail hour, to author Lan Samantha Chang's insights on how supporting writers can lift voices and put real books in readers' hands.

Delicious meals from Thyme Catering and the beautiful setting of the Kress Pavilion start our thank-you list. Heartfelt thanks to event sponsors who made the evening possible: George & Judy Harmon, Mary Kay & Jim Braza, Seifert Family Fund, Swan Abbey Press, Kimberley Schey-Scuglik, Margaret LeBrun & Dave Allen, Novel Bay Booksellers, Michael & Ann Morgan Philanthropy Fund, Nicolet Bank, and past and present Write On, Door County board members.

Grandma says get to the Washington Island Literary Festival, September 17-19!

For this week’s “Books on Tour” post, Anika Fajardo’s “The Many Mothers of Margaret Moore” stopped by Washington Island’s new food truck, “Grandma Says Try.” It’s a perfect match: the book’s main character hears the voices of her dead relatives, and, at the food truck, just look at all “Grandma” has to say!!

Grandma also says to get to the island Literary Festival (Sept 17-19, 2026) for Fajardo’s Friday writing class and/or Saturday author talk. (And the food truck is open most evenings, thru December!) Register: WILitFest.com

This is the final of six Tuesday “Books on Tour” posts featuring books by our 2026 festival authors at related island locations. Better than these posts? The festival. Join us!

We can’t believe it’s August already. The good news is that means Washington Island Literary Festival is next month! September 17-19

This week's "Books on Tour" post features Erika Meitner 's forthcoming "Assembled Audience" at Jackson Harbor Soup & Sandwiches. These poems look at what it means to gather, and wow do we love gathering at "Soup"! (Yes that's Rock Island and the Karfi ferry in the background.)

Speaking of gathering, join us to hear Meitner speak and teach on the island at the , which runs Sept 17-19, 2026. To register: wilitfest.com

This is the fifth of six "Book Tour Tuesday" posts featuring books by our 2026 featured authors at related Washington Island locations. Better than these posts? The festival itself. 🙂
