🌟Artist Spotlight: Meet Sierra Hull!🎸
Have you ever looked at a child prodigy and wondered, "Where are they now?" Sierra debuted at the Grand Ole Opry at age 10 with Alison Krause & Union Station, who she was introduced to by fellow mandolin virtuoso Chris Thile. He heard her playing one of his songs on the sidewalk at a music festival, and invited her to jam with him. She stood on stage for her first International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) at age 9, one year after picking up the mandolin for the first time. At 12 she played at Carnegie Hall. At 13 she signed with Rounder Records, and by 20 she was playing at the White House. At age 10 she produced her first independent album, and by the time she grew into a sophisticated songwriter and vocalist (at age 16) her singer-songwriter album reached Billboard Top Bluegrass Albums chart at No. 2.
Hull has collaborated with various legends, including Béla Fleck, Chris Thile, Alison Krause, Dolly Parton, Brandi Carlile, Billy Strings, Molly Tuttle, and more. She studied at the Berklee College of Music on a full ride while touring with her band. She is a seven-time Mandolin Player of the Year according to the IBMA; and she was the first woman to win the category. Earlier this year, Gibson designed a signature Sierra Hull Master Model Mandolin, making her the first female artist to receive the honor. Her 2025 album "A Tip Toe High Wire" is her first album in five years, since her departure from her longtime label Rounder Records.
Her Tennessee-bluegrass sound has evolved over a steady career into what she calls "progressive bluegrass": a creative, expansive blend of bluegrass influenced by jazz, swing, rock, and more.
Hull fronts a highly acclaimed ensemble of exceptional musicians in their own right, featuring Avery Merritt (fiddle), Erik Coveney (upright bass), Mark Raudabaugh (drums), and Shaun Richardson (guitar). Each musician's virtuosity is at a high enough caliber to support Hull's lightning speed, dynamic improvisation, and eclectic artistry.
If you missed Hull when she was last here in 2016, you have another chance: are you really going to miss one of the best mandolin players in the world? It's all happening right here! Not convinced? Watch the artist preview below!
