Never Forget!

Today, on National Vietnam Veterans Day, we pause to honor the courage, sacrifice, and resilience of the men and women who served during the Vietnam War.

Too often, this generation of veterans did not receive the welcome home they deserved. Their service was complicated, their sacrifices were real, and their stories matter. While it may feel like our nation sometimes forgets, we will not. We remember their duty. We honor their legacy. We carry their stories forward so future generations understand the cost of freedom and the strength it takes to serve.

To all Vietnam veterans: your service will never be overlooked here. Your legacy continues to inspire, to teach, and to remind us what commitment to country truly looks like.

If you are a Vietnam veteran interested in returning to Vietnam (at-not-cost) to revisit places of significance, find healing, or reconnect with history, we are here to help.

🙏RIP Ike!

FOREVER IN OUR HEARTS — Ira “Ike” Schab, a World War II Navy veteran and survivor of Japan’s Dec. 7, 1941, attack on Pearl Harbor, died at 105.

Born July 4, 1920, in Chicago, he was the eldest of three brothers. Serving aboard the USS Dobbin, he played tuba in the ship’s band. During the attack, he witnessed the USS Utah capsize, rushed below deck for ammunition, and helped pass shells to an anti-aircraft gun crew. The Dobbin lost three sailors.

Schab later served across the Pacific before studying aerospace engineering and working on Apollo at General Dynamics.

On National Underdog Day, we honor Stubby — who went from stray to “sergeant” working alongside service members during WWI.

He warned troops of gas attacks, helped locate the wounded and boosted morale on the front lines.

Today, we salute you, Stubby: https://www.si.edu/object/nmah_439710
