AERO 55

Aero55 brings together aviators in the KY 55 corridor (and beyond!) for fun, fellowship, and flying. Membership is is open to all with interest and enthusiasm.

Aero 55 is an informal organization for aviators and friends located along the KY Route 55 corridor and extending 100 NM on either side. Its purpose is to organize, promote, and coordinate social gatherings, flying activities, information sharing, safety, and support. Its focus is to help connect aviators and to celebrate and promote rural aviation in central Kentcuky and southern Indiana.

With National Park week ending today, I thought I would share my National Park Unit (NPU) visits that I’ve flown in Otis.

There are 63 US National Parks (www.NPS.gov) and 370 additional NPU’s. The 433 units are managed by the National Park Service. NPU’s include, but not limited to: National Parks, National Historic Sites, National Battlegrounds, National Memorials, National Shorelines, National Historic Parks, National Historic Trails and National Recreational Area.

NP and NPU’s are wonderful and educational places to visit. As of 2022, I had visited all 423 NPU’s, most by motorcycle. I have not kept up with the 10 additional units, but I do have a plan!

Kentucky has one NP and nine NPU’s. You can go to www.NPS.gov to get the list. My 423rd park was Camp Nelson National Monument, located just south of Lexington. I am a member of the National Park Travels Club (www.parkstamp.org). I track all my visits and stamps on this website. Great organization for $10 a year.

Here are the NPU’s I’ve visited with Otis. If you are looking for a reason to go flying, you can use continuing education of our Nation’s history as your reason. Or………Gerry and Otis did it, so I’m going to do it.

If I get 20 “yes” in the comments, I’ll put a video together of the NPU’s I’ve visited by single engine airplanes. Mostly Alaska, but there are a few other NPU’s that require flying to get there.

Breckinridge Co airport has 50 people signed up for Young Eagle flights.

Kim was flying us up to Nulltown’s fly-in breakfast this morning, but we turned towards Etown’s fly-in breakfast instead. Hagerstown (i61) had rain moving into the area. I was told they had 17 airplanes make it in for their 1st breakfast at their new location.

Etown (EKX) had a great turnout also. I’d say 20+ airplanes. Great friends, food and flying! Life is good.
