We recently had Dr. Luca Lewis speak at our Club meeting. Dr. Lewis is President of Ventura College. He has extensive higher education experience throughout the state of Washington and Idaho working and teaching at numerous Universities, Colleges and Community Colleges. In 2025 he was appointed Interim President of Ventura College and subsequently named President. Welcome to Ventura College Dr. Lewis!

Speaker Natalie Garnica, is a Senior Staff Attorney with Public Counsel, the largest non-profit public interest law firm in California. Her area of practice is providing legal counsel to former foster children on family law matters. Natalie is a 2009 graduate of Fillmore High School, a 2013 graduate of UCLA and a 2017 graduate of Loyola Law School. She lives in Fillmore with her husband Kyle and their two sons, Daniel and Adrian.
She is also the eldest daughter of our President John Garnica. 😁

In honor of Dolly Parton’s incredible legacy, her family has asked that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library. ❤️📚

It feels especially fitting that one of the best ways to honor Dolly is by continuing something she cared so deeply about—putting books into the hands of children and inspiring a lifelong love of reading.

Members of Fillmore FFA came for a visit last week. They will be at VC Fair beginning Monday until Fair ends. The students told us about the animal they are raising, how long they have been in FFA. They all answered questions from Rotarians thoughtfully and confidently. Members of the Ventura County Jr. Fairboard came for a visit. Rotarian & Jr. Fairboard Advisor Scott Beylik told us he was the first student from Fillmore to participate on the Fairboard. The organization is made up of young adults, high school age throughout Ventura County. There are currently 8 students from Fillmore out of 20 currently serving. The students put on contests during the Fair such as pie eating, lemon bobbing, watermelon eating and adult showmanship. The students told us they learn to speak in public, shake hands and get out of their comfort zone.

We presented a donation of $500 to Laura Garnica, FMS teacher and assistant Cross-Country coach. The funds are to support FMC Cross-Country team. The donation is on behalf of Santa Clarita Runners for their win of the Team Challenge at our Rotary Club of Fillmore's 5/10K Run event.

We want to send out a thank you to our FHS and FMS student groups who volunteered at our Run event.

Thank you FHS's Cross-Country team who helped with stuffing goody bags and registration. FHS Swim Team helped at finish line with water, handing out finisher medals & course water stop. Interact Club helped with course water stops & clean up. FMC Cross-Country team who helped with the Kids Fun Run and finisher medals!

We had a great turnout of parents, students and Rotarians with President Scott Beylik leading our meeting this past Wednesday. We presented nine Fillmore seniors with scholarships. We awarded $10,000 in scholarships.
