I am so excited!! I am working on creating some events to make it easier for all of the goat peeps to follow the kids marketing for their projects! The following fairs will have goats from amazing , hardworking show kids that raised goats born on our farm that will be available for at the youth auctions.
Now, I often get asked why should I support a youth auction when a feedlot or sale barn is so much cheaper.
So, here is my answer...
1. Cheap is Cheap. That means that the animals that are available at those feedlots, and sale barns are there for a reason. They are often sick, malnourished, and WILD. In the end that cheap goat will likely cost you more than a registered goat from show stock in vet bills alone.
2. Kids that participate in youth in Ag programs like 4H, FFA, and youth fairs have to purchase from healthy, vaccinated, and good show stock in order to participate at their local fairs.
and our stock specifically is vet checked, comes from clean (CL, CAE, Johnnes) biosecurity tested, BoSe given at birth, and show quality parent stock.
3. These kids have to Provide proof of healthy goats, that means the goats that go to fairs are healthy. so, that means even after they leave the farm they are required to keep them healthy and feed them well.
4. The kids that purchase from us are offered support and if they need help we are always willing. That means with nutrition, exercise, training, show support, fitting and really anything.
Why? well, because I was once a kid that showed and had lots of questions and I really appreciated the help I got, and feel that it is the responsibility of not just the parent, youth, fair volunteers, 4H leaders, etc to help. The breeder should be full service and there through the entire project. And NOT just those kids that are doing jackpots, or bigger shows too, but EVERY youth. They all deserve our time. Kids that have support are more likely to have pride in their animal and work harder!
5. Youth in Agriculture are in a competition to see who can raise an animal to be in the best breed, market and show condition that they can possibly raise!
this means that youth are feeding top knotch feed. Most of these kids are feeding Umbarger Show Feeds and that along with top genetics grow champions that will be amazing breed prospects (for does) and very good options for freezer camp (for wethers)
the same can NOT be said for those at the sale barns. Sale barns are the dumping ground for "problem" animals. this is the Elis Island of livestock..."Give me your tired, poor, huddled masses..." this is where breeders dump those goats that tested dirty on the biosecurity tests, have not gotten bred, are hard keepers, destroy fences, bad udders, bad mothers, have had abortions, and trouble in the herd, etc. I know this because I have been in the show world long enough to see it happen...LOTS!
Bottom line is sale barns are for culls.
6. The price you pay is a tax deduction!! This is great! so, if you have a business and you need a tax write-off this is a great place.
7.For wethers, this is a meat goat so please understand that this is like the Angus or Wagu beef. Goat meat is packed with nutrition, low in fat, high in protein, lower in calories than chicken and the best part is it tastes so yummy! like sweet beef. mmmmm
8. Does are sometimes offered, in fact we have 7 that will be offered at fairs throughout Michigan. These does that are offered are all out of our gorgeous, Show Buck out of NGC lines, Stapleton Farms Dark Truth.
We do not usually offer does for market projects but this year we had a lot of them, like a lot. SO, that should tell you that if you want a doe out of NGC lines, that comes from a buck that throws does...its a no brainer!
And...They are all already registered! That means that they are easy to transfer to your ABGA registered herd.
There are 3 that are still horned and can be added to your show string, and with them being fed well, and show ready...WHY NOT?
Those 3 are assumed show correct as well. The 4 others are disbudded, but all purebloods/fullbloods from really great maternal lines.
These does are genetically diverse, no line, double or in breeding here.
So with all that said, please consider your next goat purchase from one of these kids at the following fairs, and I will be creating an event for each with the pedigree, pictures, auction information, etc,
Thank you for all you do to support youth in agriculture with us!
