Fire District No. 7 is a combination department with 52 career employees and 50 volunteers. These 102 dedicated people cover 72 square miles in and around the City of Ferndale, and serve the Cherry Point Industrial area of Whatcom County. We currently have six fire stations utilizing 26 pieces of fire and EMS equipment. The district has career 24-hour staffing at four of these stations, supplement

ed by the dedicated volunteers who are assigned to all six stations. The Fire District provides fire suppression services, hazardous materials response as well as both Basic Life Support and Advanced Life Support units. The District provides one Paramedic unit to the Whatcom Medic One system. In 2018 the district answered 4801 calls for service. The number of calls for service has been increasing steadily since the early 1990s. The district is involved heavily in the community and participates in several events in and around the City of Ferndale. Last year, more than 1800 hours of “volunteer” time was spent at community events raising awareness of not only fire and personal safety, but other community needs as well. The men and women of the Fire District have been proudly serving the Ferndale community since 1957, with roots before the formation of the District going back to 1909.

Ever wonder why firefighters are sometimes spotted at local restaurants or grocery stores? It is a common question, and we are happy to share the answer!

Our crews work full 24-hour shifts, requiring them to shop for groceries, cook meals at the fire station, or occasionally get food from nearby eateries. Just like anyone else, firefighters pay for their own meals and groceries; these expenses are never funded by the city or taxpayers.

If you see a crew out and the emergency alarm sounds, they will leave instantly. Answering calls for service always takes absolute priority—whether that means abandoning a shopping cart, leaving a restaurant, or walking away from a meal that was just served.

The next time you spot firefighters out in the community, remember they are simply meeting a basic need so they can remain ready to respond to yours.

The burn ban is moving to stage 2. Please take a minute to read the details.

STAGE 2 BURN BAN

Due to increasingly dry weather conditions and low fuel moisture levels, the existing burn ban for Unincorporated Whatcom County will be upgraded to Stage 2, effective 8AM on Friday, July 17th 2026.

What this means:

ALL OPEN BURNING IS PROHIBITED, including but not limited to:
- Campfires (even in designated fire rings)
- Debris burning or brush piles
- Recreational fires of any kind

Allowed Activities (with extreme caution):
- Gas or propane stoves and grills with a shutoff valve are allowed in areas free of vegetation and with proper clearance.
- Propane and charcoal BBQs. Extreme care should be used when discarding ash and charcoal.
- Propane firepits without solid wood burning material

Why this matters:

Wildfire conditions are rapidly intensifying. Even a small spark can lead to a fast-moving, uncontrollable wildfire. The Stage 2 Burn Ban is a proactive step to reduce fire starts and keep our communities safe.

What you can do:

- Respect all fire restrictions and closures.
- Avoid activities that could cause sparks (e.g., welding, mowing dry grass, driving on tall vegetation).
- Stay updated through local fire agencies, DNR, and U.S. Forest Service websites.
- Contact any campgrounds you plan on visiting to learn about their restrictions.

It’s official! Station 41 is now staffed 24/7 365 with a crew of atleast 3 full time firefighters. This marks a historical milestone for District 7 and the Ferndale Community. That makes 5 fully staffed stations within District 7. Engine 41 and Ladder 41 will be responding out of Station 41 for the downtown area and anywhere requested. Captain Watson, FF Duncan Sturgeon and Probationary FF Jon Purdy make the first crew to respond out of Station 41. Thank you again to the community for allowing this to happen and for the support.

Only light one firework at a time and move away quickly after lighting it. Never lean over a firework when igniting it. Following simple safety steps can help prevent serious injuries.

Sparklers can reach temperatures of about 2,000 degrees F- hot enough to melt some metals. Handle with care and keep them away from clothing, dry grass, and other combustible materials.

Stage 1 Burn Ban starting June 15th for unincorporated Whatcom County!

What does this mean?
-No burning of yard waste/debris and no land clearing fires.
-Recreational fires are still allowed provided they follow the guidelines listed below!

Please be safe and do your part to reduce the risk of wildfires as we head into the hotter and drier months!
