Today is World Beard Day. Here are Silas W. Morrison and Delia Sweet Morrison. Silas was from Ohio, crossed the plains in an ox-drawn wagon, and came to Bear River in 1851. In 1856 he "took up government land on Bear River in Pacific Township." Silas and Delia married Dec. 31, 1864. They had 3 sons: Sanford Benton, Slias V., and George Williams. They also raised an Indian boy, Squire, who survived the Mattole Indian Massacre. Squire learned to read and write, helped pave Main Street, and worked as a ranch hand. From the Museum Files #2356

We learned today that what is now the Portuguese Hall was originally Roberts Hall. All the school activities were there - from drama to graduation - until 1924. So the class of '24 were the last to graduate at Roberts Hall.

Lafayette "Laff" Cornell, a native of Ohio, served in the Civil War. He came to the Eel River Valley with his family, including his wife, Prudence Sarah, and children Ed E and Fannie (Crowl) in 1888. They first lived in Port Kenyon, then Williams Creek. From the Museum files #81

It's National Dog Day! Here's George Rumrill with his rifle and two dogs. George worked for the Joseph Russ Company, first as a clerk, later on various ranches, including Bear River Ridge, Bunker Hill, and the Forest Home Ranch. George married Caroline Minerva Edeline (he was 21, she 15). She died of TB in 1889. Her eldest daughter, Carrie Ellen "Nell" took over the household chores at the age of 11. We have more information about the family - research is free for members, and $20 for non-members. From the museum files #6385
