🌊 The Ocean Plastic Purge Is Coming…

Our beaches haven’t been washing up a lot of marine debris over the past few months, but we know that can change quickly.

September and hurricane season are almost here and that usually means the ocean begins purging plastic and marine debris back onto our shores.

And when it comes… that’s our time to shine! 💪💙

Beach Junki will be ready to hit the sand, remove what the ocean sends back, and help keep our beaches cleaner and safer for sea turtles and other wildlife. 🐢🌊

We’re also getting ready for our 3rd Annual End-of-Summer Beach Cleanup with VyStar Credit Union Yulee Branch!

🐢💙 Meet Lighting Bug! 💙🐢

Yesterday, we had the privilege of transporting this beautiful juvenile green sea turtle to the Sea Turtle Hospital, and today we learned she has officially been named Lighting Bug!

Lighting Bug is the first sea turtle we’ve transported with fibropapillomatosis (FP) tumors, a disease that causes tumors to grow on sea turtles and can seriously affect their health.
The tumors can interfere with swimming, eating, and vision, but turtles can sometimes be successfully treated by removing the tumors and providing rehabilitation.

We are so thankful she is now exactly where she needs to be, receiving the care she deserves. We can’t wait to follow her journey, watch her heal, and hopefully one day see her return to the ocean. 🌊🐢

A huge thank you to Devon, Hailey, Dr. Brooke, and all the amazing staff and dedicated volunteers at the Sea Turtle Hospital who care for these special patients every single day.

We’ll be cheering you on, Lighting Bug! 💙🐢

🐢💚 Another Sea Turtle Transport!

Today we transported another juvenile green sea turtle to Sea Turtle Hospital at Whitney Lab. This girl was a little different! She is the first turtle we’ve transported with visible tumors that will be treated by Dr. Brooke and the amazing team at Whitney.

Despite not feeling her best, she was very active and full of s***k! 💚

Once she is officially named and established as a patient, we’ll be able to receive updates, and we are so excited to follow her care and hopefully watch her journey back to good health and the ocean. 🌊🐢

You’ve got this, Wiggles!

🐢 An Important Update About Scout

We want to share an update about Scout the Traveling Sea Turtle and why you may soon notice some changes to her.

Beach Junki is no longer working with the artist who provided Scout's original artwork.

When the project began, we had a written signed agreement that the artist's time and talent would be donated. Beach Junki generously covered the costs of paint, supplies, materials, and Scout's stand so those expenses would not fall on the artist.

Unfortunately, after Scout was completed and had become a big part of our outreach and educational programs, we received a demand letter seeking more than $4,000 in additional compensation or that Scout be turned over to the artist. We responded with the facts and provided our signed agreement documenting what had been agreed upon.

This was incredibly disappointing. We believed Scout was being created from a shared love of sea turtles, conservation, and educating our community.

As an all-volunteer nonprofit, I have a responsibility to protect the donations entrusted to Beach Junki and make sure they support our mission.

But we're turning something disappointing into something positive.

Scout is getting a new look!

While we were happy with the original artwork, we realized Scout doesn't fully represent Beach Junki's specific mission, and our name and branding were never incorporated into her design.

That is going to change.

Scout's new look will more clearly represent clean beaches, sea turtle conservation, education, and protecting our ocean and the Beach Junki name will proudly become part of her.

Scout is evolving into an even stronger ambassador for Beach Junki and the mission she was created to serve.

We can't wait for you to see Scout's next chapter!

Happy to transport this juvenile green sea turtle to Sea Turtle Hospital at UF Whitney Lab for Hugenaunt State Park. Thank you to Devon and Hailey for taking great care of little peanut until she can be transported to Volusia County. She has some barnacles and a small wound to her mouth, maybe from being hooked by a fisherman. We are hopeful she will make a full recovery. Good luck Peanut!

🐢💙 LOOK WHAT YOU DID — 4,000 FOLLOWERS! 💙🌊

We know 4,000 may not seem like a huge number in a world where some pages have tens of thousands of followers, but to our little nonprofit, it means more than you know.

Because behind that number are real people!
People who care about sea turtles, our beaches, our ocean, and protecting the wildlife that calls it home.

We are incredibly proud of how far Beach Junki has traveled. What started with a simple love for the beach and sea turtles has grown into a community of thousands who believe, just like we do, that even the smallest actions can make a difference.

Every time you follow our journey, share a post, learn something new, teach a child, pick up a piece of trash, protect a sea turtle, or simply stop and care, you become part of our mission.

We may be a small nonprofit, but thanks to all of you, our message keeps traveling farther than we ever imagined. 🐢🌊

So today, we aren't comparing our numbers to anyone else's. We're simply taking a moment to be proud of how far we've come and, most importantly, to say THANK YOU for getting us here.

This milestone belongs to all of you. 💙

🐢💚 Turtle Love! 💚🐢

Not exactly the kind of turtle we usually share but hey, turtle love is turtle love!

We spend a lot of time talking about our beloved sea turtles, but we have a soft spot for all turtles. These two common snapping turtles were caught sharing a little romance in the wild!

It’s always pretty amazing to witness moments like this and see nature doing what comes naturally. Whether they live in the ocean, ponds, creeks, or wetlands, we’ll always stop to appreciate a turtle.
