Please join us for our next meeting on January 12th at 7:00pm.
Jane Philips Collins will present a program on John D. Vaughan and the Vaughan-Scott Cemetery.
Lt. John D.Vaughan was in the American Revolution and the War of 1812. His cemetery is located near the southern end of Amelia Island.
There is a very small cemetery located in Amelia City that is virtually unknown, even though it is just off the First Coast Highway. It is truly hidden in plain sight. And, it has a fascinating story.
The Vaughan-Scott Cemetery is the resting place of Lieutenant John D.Vaughan, a soldier in the American Revolution and the War of 1812. Over the years, his grave has been marked by the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Sons of the American Revolution and the United Daughters of 1812. The Amelia Island Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution restored the completely overgrown cemetery and a marker was dedicated in 2010.
Jane Collins was a member of the committee tasked with research and renovation of the cemetery in 2006 and remains the leading caretaker. She will tell about John Vaughan and show many documents and photos dating back to the first marking ceremony in 1928.
Jane has lived in Fernandina Beach, in the Amelia City area, most of her life. She is a native Floridian with Florida pioneer ancestors. She loves everything about the history of Florida, especially that of Amelia Island.
