Mary McLeod Bethune was an early mentor for Dorothy Height, who served as the fourth president of NCNW from 1957 to 1998. Height described her first encounter with Mrs. Bethune in 1937, shortly after she started working at the Harlem Young Women’s Christian Association.

Ms. Height was escorting the First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt to her car following an event when Mrs. Bethune told Dorothy that “the freedom gates are half ajar.” She went on, “we must pry them fully open.” Ms. Height remembered in her memoir that she was fully committed to Mrs. Bethune’s call to action for freedom and equality from that point on.

Kids in grades K-3 are matched with teen volunteers and spend 30 minutes each week reading aloud during the 6-week series. A limited number will be able to participate and may be chosen by lottery.
