Violence Free Minnesota recently shared the the "Rooted in Community: Survivor Defined Safety Through Culturally Responsive Practices" report.

https://www.vfmn.org/reports

This report answers the question: “What might domestic violence response, support, and services look like if we listened to the survivors most often left out of the conversation?”

VFMN partnered with culturally specific advocacy programs across Minnesota to conduct focus groups with survivors of domestic violence from diverse communities. Survivors shared their experiences with abuse, barriers to seeking safety, and the interventions they believe could have made a difference.
While each community identified unique challenges shaped by culture, history, and systemic inequities, common themes emerged across groups, including the need for safe and affordable housing, flexible financial assistance, culturally specific advocacy services, healthy relationship education, community-based intervention options, and improved responses from systems such as law enforcement, schools, and employers.
The findings underscore the importance of investing in survivor-centered, culturally responsive approaches that recognize the diverse realities of survivors and expand pathways to safety, healing, accountability, and long-term well-being.

Sexual violence doesn’t end when the moment does. For many survivors, the impact can show up later as post-traumatic stress.

PTSD isn’t just something that happens after combat. It can affect anyone who experiences trauma, including sexual violence. It may look like flashbacks, trouble sleeping, feeling on edge, or avoiding reminders of what happened.

These responses are not a sign of weakness—they’re how the brain tries to cope with something overwhelming.

Learning this helps us show up with more understanding, less judgment, and real support.

As the school year comes to an end, your children may have more free time – that makes this an important time to renew your conversation with them about staying safe online. BCA online safety experts offer these tips:

• Rather than focusing on “stranger danger,” talk with your children about tricky or manipulative people. Help your child understand what grooming and coercion look like - asking them to keep secrets, isolating them, pressuring them, making them feel obligated to do things, excessive gift-giving, excessive flattery and compliments early on in the relationship, etc.

• Disable all location and GPS-tracking settings on every app. Many apps have default settings that share your location. Avoid “tagging” photos, or “checking in” at places you visit.

• Ask your child to show you what each app does, how it works, who they talk to and why they like the app. Review privacy and safety settings together. Discuss boundaries and guidelines you have around technology use.

• Do not post pictures of others without their permission.

Start the conversation today to help them stay safe. For more information about staying safe online, go to: https://dps.mn.gov/divisions/bca/bca-divisions/investigative-services/specialized-investigative-services/predatory-crimes/resources-victim-survivors-predatory-crimes
