What a lovely weekend our troop had at a campout at the Ferdinand State Forest focused on one of Scouting's most important missions — building up the next generation of Scouts! Our newest members worked toward their Tenderfoot rank while our youth leaders led the way, because that's the Scouting method at its best: Scouts teaching Scouts.
Here's a taste of what we tackled this weekend:
🩹 First Aid
🔥 Campfire cooking + a legendary fried turkey dinner!
🎣 Fishing
🌿 Plant & animal identification
🪢 Useful knots
🎒 Packing lists & quartermaster skills
🥾 Hiking
🌉 Crossing a troop-built rope bridge over a creek!
Scouting is about character, leadership, and learning by doing, and this weekend had all of it. It was also great preparation for our upcoming week of summer camp, where our Scouts will be putting some of these skills to the test!
Big thanks to our leaders, parents, and volunteers who made it all happen. The future of this troop continues to shine bright!

Mining has played a major role in the development of society by providing the raw materials needed for tools, buildings, transportation, technology, and energy. In Scouting, learning about mining helps Scouts understand how natural resources impact everyday life, careers, conservation, and safety. ⚒

At one of our last troop meetings, our youth leaders ran a classic game of Steal the Bacon, and it was full of smiles! Games like this are more than just fun. They require advance planning during our Patrol Leader Council meetings, and also build quick thinking, teamwork, and friendly competition. We love watching our Scouts step up to lead activities.

Our scouts recently returned from an action-packed adventure in Kentucky. We set up basecamp at Camp McKee, and though the weather cut our stay to just one night, we made every single minute count!

Highlights from the trip:
- The Views: We hiked up to Natural Bridge, where the scenery was absolutely breathtaking.
- The Thrills: Our scouts took on the Via Ferrata rock climbing course! Even with a light sprinkle of rain making things a bit "interesting" and scary, everyone showed incredible grit—and we’re happy to report nobody fell!
- Wildlife Encounters: Between learning about venomous caterpillars (no stings reported!) and sharing the outhouse with some very brave resident mice, the scouts got a real crash course in the local Kentucky critters!

We’re so proud of how our scouts handled the heights, the rain, and the challenges with great spirits. Can’t wait for the next one!

Several of our older scouts and (not that old) leaders recently returned from an incredible extended weekend backpacking trip through the Garden of the Gods in Illinois. Navigating the rugged trails and stunning sandstone formations of the Shawnee National Forest was more than just a hike—it was a true test of the values we strive for every day, and great practice for an upcoming trip to Philmont Scout Ranch.
By practicing Leave No Trace principles and demonstrating resilience through every mile, these scouts showed exactly what it means to be a leader in the outdoors. From careful planning to working together to navigate the wilderness, they embodied the spirit of "Be Prepared."
Check out a few highlights from their journey below!
