Golden Sparrow Nature Society

Golden Sparrow Nature Society Enter the school on the north side (of the dark brown section of school) nearest to the superintendent's office.

The Golden Sparrow Nature Society is a group of nature enthusiasts who meet the second Saturday of every month at 10:00 am EDT in room 144 of Forest Park High School in Ferdinand, Indiana. Led by regional outdoor writer Ken Barnes, the club started in early 2009. Ken conducts the meetings and teaches how to attract, identify, and enjoy birds and all wildlife of southern Indiana. The club is open t

o everyone and all meetings are free. Whether you have a small interest in birds or have a passion for all of nature, whether you want to learn to identify birds or share your enthusiasm or knowledge of what you already know--all are welcome. If you are new to the club, be sure to call Ken Barnes or Rock Emmert (phone numbers are below) to know for certain where the next meeting will be, since some months the group takes a field trip instead of meeting in the classroom. Club activities so far have included guest speakers on falconry, field trips/bird watching at Patoka Lake and the Ferdinand State Forest, as well as active participation in the annual Ferdinand Folk Festival (www.ferdinandfiolkfestival.com) set for September 17, 2011. For more information, contact Ken Barnes at 812-746-8691 or Rock Emmert at 812-631-2856.

I wanted to say that I am scheduled to be at the Ferdinand Folk Festival in Dubois County on Saturday, September 21, for a book signing. I will also be there as the founder of the Golden Sparrow Nature Society to answer any questions about birds, animals, or nature. I will have many of my books: some on local history (Warrick and Spencer County), some on nature, and others on the Bible. I have some for children, as well as my book about the outdoors, which has most of my newspaper and magazine articles. I have an e-book about solar electric as I lived off the grid for 23 years. I also have several books from my most popular series “The Mammoth Slayers.”

On Sunday, October 13, I am to be at the Bristow Car Show (that’s in Perry County) for another book signing.

On the weekend of November 2 &3 I am to be at the Boonville 4-H Center, where I will also have a book signing.

On Saturday, November 9, at 10 am until noon EST, or 9am until 11am CST, I will be at the Ferdinand Public Library. I will be conducting a program on how to attract birds to backyard feeding stations. Feeding the birds during the winter is a very popular way to see the beauty of nature. Over the years I have had over 60 species of birds come to my feeders. I also have an e-book on Amazon titled “Birds and Animals of Southern Indiana” with many of the photos I have taken of birds and animals, along with some great photos taken by some members of Indiana Nature and Wildlife Photographers.

If you can make it to any of these events, drop by and say “Hi”.

Photos below were taken several years ago.

The first hummingbird showed up today, April 15th, which is usually the time the males arrive. This time, however, it was a female. My wife saw it, but by the time I looked it was zooming away. When it returned I saw that it was a female. In nearly thirty years of feeding hummingbirds it has always been a male that shows up first because they stake out their territory. I live just south of I 64 in northern Perry County.

I recently contacted the Indiana DNR about erecting nest boxes for barn owls. They said they have limited resources when it comes to putting up the boxes. I have seen only two barn owls in my area over the last several years and one I found dead along the highway in Dubois County. I live in Perry County and I started a small organization called the Golden Sparrow Nature Society, which can be Googled and found. It is also on my page. Because of all the shutdowns I have not been able to have any meetings since last spring. If anyone is interested please let me know.
I found some plans on the Internet. It takes one sheet of exterior or treated plywood about 1/2 inch thick. It also takes some narrow strips of wood, some screws, calking, two hinges and a small bolt for a door and a small piece of roofing. It should cost about $50.00 to build. It can't leak of the young could get chilled and die. The placement should be about 12 feet off the ground or more and in an isolated spot near a field or pasture. The nest box can be on a post or in a tree. Building takes only one person; getting it erected could take two people. Below is one that is good: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YQ3D4KuRdp4
The Indiana DNR also has building plans for a pole mounted nest box. It is a little simpler and would be easier to build.

I recently had a review about my novel "The Golden Sparrow" on Amazon. It is a rather long review and the reader said they very much enjoyed the book. I believe they gave it a four star rating. The book was written because of a real golden sparrow, which was a common house sparrow with a gene mutation. I tell why the book was written in the back of the book. I started the novel in 1986 after I discovered a house sparrow that was white with gold wing patches. After I began the book I discovered a real golden sparrow with the white one! This is why the I named the club the Golden Sparrow Society.
