🐾 Why We Teach Our Dogs to Ignore Food

It might look a little funny when a dog walks right past a dropped piece of food… but for a service dog, that’s a really big deal.

Our dogs are taught not to take food from the ground or from strangers. Not because they aren’t tempted, but because their job is to stay focused and safe no matter what’s going on around them.

Imagine being in a grocery store, a restaurant, or even just walking down the street. There are distractions everywhere. A service dog needs to be able to ignore all of that and stay tuned in to their handler.

It’s also about safety. Dogs shouldn’t eat something unless it comes from the person they’re working with. That helps prevent them from picking up something harmful or getting distracted at the wrong time.

So, if you ever see one of our dogs walk right past a snack on the ground, just know, that’s not an accident. That’s training, trust, and a dog doing exactly what they’re meant to do. 💙🐕

🐾 What Is Task Work?

One of the most important parts of service dog training is something called task work, skills that directly help a handler in their daily life.

In this video, you’re seeing a dog practice a task where they alert their handler when someone is approaching. Eventually, we will work on him alerting when his back is turned. This can be incredibly helpful for individuals who experience anxiety, PTSD, or difficulty with awareness in busy environments.

Instead of being caught off guard, the handler gets a clear, calm signal from their dog—giving them time to adjust, prepare, or move to a more comfortable space.

These tasks may look simple, but they are life-changing. They help create a sense of safety, confidence, and independence that many of our handlers haven’t felt in a long time.

This is what our dogs are training for every day. 💙🐕

🐾 Needing a Forever Home for Bubba Brill 💙

This one is a little bittersweet for us.

Bubba Brill is a 6-month-old yellow Lab with a big personality and an even bigger heart. He’s everything we look for—smart, loving, playful, and eager to learn. Bubba gets along wonderfully with kids and other dogs, and he brings joy wherever he goes.

He’s also off to a great start with his training:
✔️ Crate trained
✔️ Potty trained
✔️ Walks nicely on leash

Bubba truly loves to work and be part of a team, which makes this decision all the more difficult.

Due to a history of seizures, Bubba needed to be released from our program. This is never an easy call, especially with a dog as special as he is. The good news is that, according to his veterinarian, his seizures are manageable with affordable medication, and Bubba continues to be a happy, active puppy who loves life.

Now, we’re focused on finding him something just as important as a job, a forever home.

Bubba is up to date on all vaccinations and ready for his next chapter with a family who will love him for exactly who he is.

👉 If you feel like Bubba might be the right fit for your home, please message us to learn more.
👉 Even if you can’t adopt, sharing this post helps us find the perfect match for him.

He may not have continued on the service dog path, but Bubba is going to make an incredible companion for someone, and we can’t wait to see him thrive in the life he deserves. 🐕💙
