Youth Takes Center Stage at Our District Conference in Walla Walla.

"Jason Smith of Monroe High School, a recent short-term Youth Exchange participant, spoke candidly about bullying and feeling like he didn’t belong. His exchange in Germany helped him build confidence, embrace what makes him different, and realize he can create connection anywhere."

"Sallye Lindsay, President of the Federal Way Rotary Club, joined Jason to reflect on how her Youth Exchange to Australia nearly 30 years ago still shapes her life. She is current President of Federal Way Rotary and serves on a task force working to re-ignite our district’s youth exchange program."

At the Marcus Whitman Hotel in Walla Walla, twelve youth program participants brought fresh energy to the District Conference—moving more than 340 R

Last Wednesday’s BINGO Social at the PAEC was a smash hit—our seniors rocked the cards, devoured the treats, enjoyed the tunes, and walked away with brag-worthy prizes. Big thanks to the all-star crew who made it happen and to everyone who came out and made the event a success!

Today we celebrate an important day in Rotary history. It was on this day in 1987 that the US Supreme Court ruled that Rotary clubs may not exclude women from membership on the basis of gender.

The story started in 1976 when the Rotary Club of Duarte in California admitted three women to membership. When the club refused to remove the women from membership, Rotary International revoked the club’s charter. The club filed a lawsuit and the case wound its way through the US court system, eventually getting to the US Supreme Court.

After the decision was handed down, Rotary’s lawyer stated that allowing women into Rotary “threatens to force us to take in everyone, like a motel.”

While Rotary International did not officially change its rules until 1989, the US Supreme Court’s May 4, 1987 decision is an important milestone for women in Rotary.
