What becomes possible when we invest in mothers?

More access to care. More support. More families with someone in their corner.

And right now, that matters more than ever.

On October 1, approximately 11,000 Washington residents lost Apple Health coverage following changes to federal eligibility rules. For families in our communities, that can mean confusing paperwork, delayed care, missed appointments, and not knowing where to turn.

At GPS, we ask: How can we help?

Our trained Community Health Worker helps families navigate changing requirements, paperwork and renewals, and connects them to healthcare and community resources.

Because families don’t just need information.

They need someone they trust enough to ask for help.

This is why we’re incredibly grateful for a $200,000, two-year commitment from Roots & Wings Foundation toward our $1 Million for Mothers Campaign.

This is what investing in mothers makes possible.

The goal is $1 million.

The quality of care a family receives should never depend on the language they speak.

Imagine preparing to welcome a new baby while trying to navigate appointments, medical information, and life-changing decisions in a language you don’t fully understand.

No family should have to face that alone.
At Global Perinatal Services, our doulas collectively speak 22 languages, helping families receive compassionate pregnancy, birth, postpartum, and parenting support in the language that feels most familiar to them.

Because language is more than communication.

It’s trust.

It’s dignity.

It’s the confidence to ask questions and understand your options.

Every family deserves the opportunity to begin parenthood with dignity, support, and hope.

The earliest days of a child’s life can shape a lifetime. When families have access to compassionate care, healthier beginnings become healthier futures.

If you have a Donor-Advised Fund (DAF), you already have one of the most powerful tools for charitable giving.

What is a DAF?
A Donor-Advised Fund is a charitable giving account that allows you to set aside money for philanthropy, receive potential tax benefits, and recommend grants to the nonprofits you care about.

Many people already have a DAF through organizations like Fidelity Charitable, Schwab Charitable, Vanguard Charitable, National Philanthropic Trust, or a local community foundation.

October 8 is DAF Day—a national celebration of the impact Donor-Advised Funds have on nonprofits and the communities they serve. But you don’t have to wait until then to make a difference.

Beginning today, October 1, federal Medicaid eligibility changes will affect Apple Health coverage for some of the communities we serve across Washington State.

For those affected, these changes bring very practical questions: Am I still covered? What am I eligible for now? Do I need to reapply? Where can I go for help?

This is where community-based organizations matter.

At Global Perinatal Services, we help community members navigate benefits, apply or reapply for coverage, complete renewals, understand available options, and reduce unnecessary gaps in care.

You do not have to be a GPS patient to come to us for this support.

And losing one form of coverage does not necessarily mean there are no other options. Depending on eligibility, other coverage pathways may still be available — and our team can help community members understand what comes next.

And when insurance is a barrier, care doesn’t have to stop. Through our Easy Access Clinic, community members can access comprehensive prenatal and women’s health care regardless of insurance or immigration status.

Systems change. Our commitment to keeping care within reach does not. This is what community infrastructure looks like.

Changing how care feels starts with who is standing beside you.

Last week, Global Perinatal Services trained a new cohort of doulas—preparing more women to walk alongside families through pregnancy, birth, and postpartum with knowledge, advocacy, and culturally responsive care.

But the impact reaches far beyond the birth room.
For many refugee and immigrant women, doula training creates a pathway into the workforce—turning language, cultural knowledge, lived experience, and a commitment to community into meaningful, paid careers.

It means creating jobs. Building skills. Expanding economic opportunity. And helping women build greater financial security for themselves and their families.

And when the people providing care reflect the communities they serve, families gain something equally powerful: care rooted in understanding, trust, language, and culture.

This is what investing in women can do. It strengthens the workforce. It strengthens families. It strengthens communities.

And it moves us closer to what we believe care should be.

Not only accessible. Not only high-quality. But care that feels different.

Care where families feel heard, respected, and supported.

Birthing in America is about more than preparing for birth. It’s about making an unfamiliar healthcare system feel a little more understandable.

Last week, GPS partnered with the Swedish Doctors to facilitate our Birthing in America series, a program created by GPS to help newly arrived immigrant and refugee families understand what to expect during pregnancy and birth in the United States.

GPS Executive Director Faisa Farole and Community Health Worker Coordinator Asia Farole led the session.

Afterward, one of our partners shared:
“We were thrilled with how much they enjoyed the event and how comfortable they felt participating. You both brought wonderful expertise and energy to the session and made our patients feel so welcomed and understood.”

That is exactly what this work is about.

Swedish is one of the many community and healthcare partners GPS works alongside to bring culturally responsive information, support, and care directly to families.
