What if one conversation could change a family's breastfeeding journey?

This Black Breastfeeding Week, we're honored to share the voice of Carmen Lewis, PhD, RN, IBCLC, Maternal Health Educator & Lactation Specialist at GPS.

In this powerful conversation, Carmen shares why Black Breastfeeding Week matters, why culturally responsive breastfeeding support is essential, and how we can all play a role in ensuring Black mothers and babies have the opportunity to thrive.

If you or someone you know has questions about breastfeeding, the GPS Lactation Hotline is here to help. As Washington's first nonprofit Lactation Hotline, we connect families with trusted, culturally responsive breastfeeding support when they need it most.

This Black Breastfeeding Week, you can also help ensure more families have access to programs like the Lactation Hotline and other life-changing services.

By supporting our $1 Million for Mothers Campaign, you're investing in healthier families, stronger communities, and a future where more mothers and babies can survive and thrive.

Together, we can build healthier families and stronger communities.

What does it really mean to have access to healthcare?

A service can exist. A person can have insurance.

An appointment can be available.

And care can still remain out of reach.

At Global Perinatal Services, we see the space between care that exists and care people can actually access—and we believe that space deserves far more attention.

Because access isn’t simply about whether a service is there.

It’s whether people can reach it, understand it, trust it, and use it.

GPS exists in that gap.

Support shouldn’t depend on your ZIP code.

A mother’s access to breastfeeding support shouldn’t be determined by where she lives, the language she speaks, or the resources she has.

We’re working to change that.

Through our $1 Million for Mothers Campaign, we’re expanding access to culturally rooted lactation support, maternal health education, care navigation, and parenting resources so more families can receive the care they deserve.

Every gift helps ensure that more mothers and babies have access to trusted support when they need it most.

If you believe every family deserves that opportunity, we’d be honored to have you join us.

📣 Calling Experienced Doulas!

The doula profession continues to grow, and with that growth comes an opportunity to strengthen professionalism, ethical practice, client safety, and public trust.

We’re recruiting experienced doulas to serve on the Doula Quality Management Program Committee—a collaborative initiative that will help support fair review processes, elevate professional standards, and promote accountability across the doula profession.

This committee is being convened in partnership with community organizations and maternal health leaders to bring together diverse perspectives and experiences from across the doula community.

If you’re passionate about strengthening our profession and helping shape the future of doula care, we’d love to hear from you.

To express your interest or learn more, please email [email protected].

We look forward to building this important work together.

GPS Impact | A Healthy Start Changes Everything

A baby’s first days can shape a lifetime.

That’s why supporting families during pregnancy, birth, and the early postpartum period is one of the most meaningful investments we can make in the health of our communities.

In 2025, 91% of families served through our Birth Doula Program initiated breastfeeding at birth.

Behind that number are parents who felt prepared. Babies who received the benefits of early breastfeeding. Families who had compassionate, culturally responsive support when they needed it most.

At Global Perinatal Services, we know that healthier beginnings don’t happen by chance. They happen when families have access to trusted education, skilled support, and care that respects their language, culture, and lived experiences.
Every family deserves the opportunity to start strong.

💛 If this mission resonates with you, help us build healthier beginnings by sharing this post or supporting our work.

GPS Impact | 21 Languages. One Mission.

Healthcare begins with trust. Trust begins with being understood.

For many families, one of the greatest barriers to receiving quality maternal healthcare isn’t distance.
It isn’t cost. It’s language.

No parent should have to navigate pregnancy, birth, or postpartum care without fully understanding the information that could shape the health of their family.
That’s why culturally responsive care is at the heart of everything we do.

In 2025, GPS provided culturally responsive perinatal support in 21 languages, ensuring more families could access care with dignity, confidence, and respect.

Because language is more than communication.
It’s informed consent.

It’s trust between a family and their care team.
It’s feeling seen, heard, and valued during one of life’s most important moments.

At GPS, we’re committed to building a future where every family has access to compassionate, culturally rooted care—regardless of the language they speak or where they come from.

This is what health equity looks like.

If this mission resonates with you, we’d be honored if you shared this post with your network.

Every conversation helps raise awareness, strengthen communities, and connect more families to the care they deserve.

If you’d like to help expand this work, you can support GPS through our website. (And if you have a Donor-Advised Fund, we’ve made that easier too.)

Help ensure every family has access to compassionate, culturally responsive care.
