Federal Way Youth Action Team COMMUNITY PROGRAMS

---HYPE (Helping Young People Achieve Excellence)---
What is it? What does it do? Teaches concrete skills and empowers youth.

The Federal Way Youth Action Team is a community consortium implemented in response to a rise in community violence, disproportionality in the juvenile justice system, and identified service gaps for youth at risk in South King County. A weekend based program hosted by the community to teach skills and foster positive youth development. How do I get here? Members can be referred through the juveni

le legal system or school staff. What does it look like? Workshops are hosted by members of the community to help develop and foster skills of young people. Projects that both benefit the community and the youth who participate help develop skills, relationships within the community, and provide mentorship. https://www.facebook.com/hypefederalway/

---Positive Outcomes Program---

What is it? A resource for young people who are or may be involved in the juvenile legal system. This program is designed to alternatively approach disciplinary actions toward youth in the community. Referrals are made through schools or juvenile probation officers. In place of punitive community service requirements, young people are provided with guidance and opportunities to foster their individual skills and interest to help them thrive. Community leaders collaborate to provide a collective impact on both the young person and the community. This can mean individual case management provided by MSC or mentorship with community members.

---Game of Life---
What is it? A basketball program for young men, ages 18-25. Teaches skills to facilitate mental and physical health, as well as concrete skills. Game of Life meets every Monday and Thursday from 8 to 9:30. You don’t need a referral or to register beforehand, everyone is encouraged to come whenever they can! This program plays basketball as well as provides a space to encourage and explore mental health. Workshops are taught surrounding different topics relevant to the population, such as high school credits, EBT, TANF and parenting.

Congratulations to FWYAT Board of Director Representative Jesse Elijah Johnson on the passing of his Bill HB 2905 in the House with unanimous bipartisan support of 96-0! Thank you for your advocacy and visionary leadership for the City of Federal Way.

It is past 11 pm on a Sunday night and I just passed my Bill HB 2905 in the House with unanimous bipartisan support 96-0! Did you know that cavities and tooth decay are the number one chronic disease affecting kids in our State? This bill will expand dental and oral health care access statewide for all families, particularly for low-income children and children of color. The Access to Baby and Child’s Dentistry program is a localized program to prevent dental problems before they occur, reduce dental care costs for working families and improve overall health. It will also play an important role in recruiting additional providers to community-based health centers and private practice because it is a public-private partnership to support Medicaid-enrolled children and families. Onward we go to the Senate!
