It took timing of the Cuyahoga river catching on fire for the 13th time with the novelty of the first black mayor of a major US city to catch the attention of the press. This article does a great job telling the story of how Carl Stokes used the press to tell a story of a burning river.

The day after the Cuyahoga caught fire for the 13th time, Mayor Carl Stokes led journalists on a tour of the polluted river, making visible what Clevelanders had endured for decades: oil slicks, chemical waste, debris, and water so degraded that fish could not survive. His efforts drew national atte...

Garden and backyard sheds can be perfect for harvesting rainwater with rain barrels because of their smaller impervious area. Last weekend's 1 inch rain filled one and a half rain barrels (about 90 gallons) off this backyard storage shed.

Thank you Shaw Elementary for sharing your classroom with us to talk about people impact our waterways! The students learned about where water is in Earth and created bar graphs from data collected as a waterdrop as it moves through our Earth's systems. And always, they learned about what they can do to protect water from pollution!

Know the Flow NWA did a fantastic job leading Pick Up Where You Play Fall litter cleanups. Over the months of September and October there were 17 cleanups, 684 volunteers participated, and 11,473 lbs of trash was removed from the watershed!

Fun Fact! 11,473 lbs is roughly the equivalent of each of the following:
๐Ÿ˜ 1 adult African elephant
๐ŸŽน 5 grand pianos
๐Ÿ“ 5,700 chickens
That helps put into perspective just how much litter was removed from the waterways to help improve water quality!

Thank you to all of the volunteers who contributed to this event! If you participated you are welcome to join the Volunteer Thank You Event on Saturday, January 10th, 2026 at Farrell's Lounge, Bar and Grill sponsored by Boulevard Brewing Company!

Also, IRWP has set the date for the 7th Annual Illinois River Cleanup: Saturday, April 18th, 2026! If you have a location in the watershed needing some more TLC, please email [email protected] so we can include it in these cleanups.

Last week we hosted Clemson University Extension for a training on Post-Construction BMPs where participants learned about emerging LID infrastructure such as bioretention, permeable pavers, and underground detention and how to inspect each. Thank you to the employees from thirteen cities, one county, the U of A, and EDG who attended, and a BIG thank you to Clemson Extension Carolina Clear !
