Introducing our English Teacher and Career Coach, Trenton Guthrie! Trenton grew up just across the Oklahoma border but spent most of his childhood in Northwest Arkansas. At OLC, Trenton helps students achieve their goal of becoming fluent in English and also helps them and other staff members achieve their goals. He most enjoys helping students align their goals with their career interests. Seeing them decide what they want to dedicate their time and passion to provides him with incredible satisfaction.

Outside the classroom, Trenton recently earned his Master's in Creative Writing and spends most of his time going to the movies with friends and family, writing stories, and baking delicious goods like cheesecakes and pastries.

Trenton is a wonderful asset to our team. His passion, ambition, and thoughtful guidance enrich both our students and OLC staff. We are honored to have him as an ESL Teacher, Career Coach, and Content Writer.

Join OLC as an In-Home ESL Tutor!

This is such an important and transformative program that not only provides accessible education to those who face barriers to attending our in person classes, but it changes lives for both students and tutors as they form neighborly friendships and supportive learning environments that fosters growth and connection within the whole NWA community.

Through this opportunity, OLC provides training, resources, and full support to volunteer tutors to enter adult students' homes as a tutor. This program was implemented as a partnership with for welcoming some of our newest neighbors to the area including refugees, asylees, and other populations who face barriers such as transportation and childcare to attending our in-building classes.

You must be 18 years or older to join and be willing to participate in a background check that OLC will pay for.

Please help us give a heartfelt goodbye to our wonderful Shoon. From being an AmeriCorps Member for Ozark Literacy Council back in 2021 to becoming an Office Manager for our organization in August 2024, and eventually the Curriculum and Volunteer Manager, Shoon has become an integral part of our organization and community.

While at OLC, Shoon has found inspiration in her leadership role and in the people around her. She has found that, while serving and providing educational opportunities to our students and community members, she is now more motivated than ever to finish her education in Clinical and Mental Health Counseling.

She is incredibly proud of her work and accomplishments, especially her ability to develop and expand our volunteer program. Her work has really created more paths for student/volunteer engagement and connection, and we would not be where we are today without her efforts.

Outside of the organization, Shoon is an artist and entrepreneur. She works on incredibly beautiful artwork, charms, shirts, and more. She is talented in many ways, and we cannot be prouder of how she has utilized that talent for us, her business, and the Northwest Arkansas community. She leaves us with some final thoughts of encouragement: “When I’m asked, ‘What do you do when you can’t do nothing, but there’s nothing you can do?’ I will always respond and tell others, ‘Do what you can.’”

We are incredibly fortunate to have had her as part of our OLC team and wish her the brightest of futures ahead!

Our Advanced students took another trip to Stone Bread Mill to apply their learning outside of the classroom. It has been about a year since our students took this trip, so this was a massive opportunity to see how much our students have improved in applying their lessons to their everyday life. It's one thing to teach them these lessons, but it's another thing completely to watch them apply it and see how much they have grown!! A year has already made so much difference in their skills and we are looking forward to so much more.

Recently, we had the honor of attending CanopyNWA's 10th Anniversary event, where we got to meet members of our community and Canopy staff, along with experiencing entertainment by talented members of our community, including one of our very own volunteers, Jeremiah Griffin! It was a wonderful experience to participate in and we want to thank the members of Canopy NWA for inviting us. We're so proud of your organization, what you do, what your mission is and looking forward to many more years with you. We're thankful to have an organization like yours elevate our community!

Introducing our Communications and Outreach Manager, Jonathan Chan! With a heart of gold and a desire to serve his community, he has joined our family here at Ozark Literacy Council to forge the relationships needed to create the opportunities he wished his family had when he was younger.

Born in Fort Smith, Arkansas, Jonathan’s family had originally immigrated to the United States from Laos. He grew up in a small immigrant community in Orem, Utah, before returning to Springdale, AR, where he has spent most of his life. With experience in underserved communities as a minority, his goal is to help the community become educated on the resources and development available for them, not just to the underserved, but to everyone.

Through his efforts and flexibility, we have already seen our community partnership participation grow exponentially, planned fundraisers that contributed over $11,000 to our organization in the last year, and assisted in optimizing organization structure and operations.

Jonathan sees himself as a straightforward, simple person outside of work. He enjoys exercising, building robotic and architectural models, spending time with friends and family, and watching movies. His relationships with staff and students are at the heart of our organization. We are honored to have him here and look forward to supporting his continued growth with Ozark Literacy Council.
