Last week news broke that the NC Dept of Environmental Quality expanded the radius for PFAS water testing to include nearly all of Cumberland County and parts of 5 others including Hoke, Bladen, Sampson, Robeson, and Harnett. Additionally, CityView of Fayetteville broke news that our local water provider PWC could potentially lose $80 million in federal funding to install PFAS filtration systems, energy infrastructure, and lead pipe replacements due to the Trump administration’s federal funding freeze. And now state regulators at the N.C. Environmental Management Commission are considering a proposal that would make it easier for producers of cancer-causing, forever chemicals to continue to contaminate our water. If implemented, the companies would be responsible for self-monitoring PFAS levels in their own waste discharge and be responsible for implementing plans to reduce them. Companies like Chemours aka DuPont have already shown they CANNOT be trusted.
If the federal funding doesn't come through, local residents will have to foot the bill while Chemours, the company responsible for polluting the Cape Fear River and cities across America, continues to contaminate our water and rake in billions every year. Join us Saturday, April 5 at 11 AM at the Public Works Commission to make your voices heard.
