Canopy's Maternal Health Team was honored to attend the screening of The Ebony Canal and its after-show panel discussion at the Bentonville Film Festival in June. We extend a big thank you to Ingeborg Initiatives for inviting us.

Directed by Emmai Alaquiva, and narrated by Viola Davis, The Ebony Canal explores the infant mortality crisis and disparities in maternal health among Black and Brown women in the United States, highlighting powerful stories of healing and hope. The testimonies in this documentary inspire solution-driven practices that can transform the future of maternal care.

Canopy is committed to supporting refugee and immigrant mothers living in Northwest Arkansas. Maternal health is a pillar of the Long Welcome. We help mothers with prenatal care, home-visit care coordination, postpartum support, and essential local resources.

Meet Emma and Clema! They are Canopy’s Certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians. These two amazing women teach safe car seat use and help parents correctly install car seats in their vehicles.

Motor vehicle crashes are one of the leading causes of injury and death among children, but using a dependable car seat significantly reduces the risk of serious injury. Emma and Clema are creating a safer environment for our community’s children.

Canopy accepts brand new car seat donations as part of its Long Welcome to support our new neighbors.

Want to learn about car seat installation? Contact Emma Gichere at [email protected]

This month, we're celebrating five years of Malath at Canopy! 🎉

Malath has grown from Case Aide to Case Management Supervisor, and now leads health promotion activities for refugees across the state in our Arkansas’s Office for Refugees division. Her journey is such a wonderful reflection of her compassion, skill, and dedication. The impact she has had along the way is even greater.

Malath has made Canopy stronger and brought so much thoughtfulness and creativity to our work. Here's to five years and all that's ahead!

It’s National Community Health Worker Awareness Week, and Canopy is celebrating our trained Community Health Workers (CHWs)! Every day, Patience, Monica, Isidore, and Mugisha connect our new neighbors with the care and resources they need. CHWs support individuals and families, helping them to navigate local healthcare and social services and overcome barriers to care and wellness.

Our commitment to the Long Welcome asks that we prioritize the health and happiness of our Northwest Arkansas community members. CHWs make this possible. Join us in thanking them for the invaluable skills and talents they share with our new neighbors!

We're honored to receive support from the Blue & You Foundation for a Healthier Arkansas for our new Refugee Health Empowerment Initiative!

This initiative will help refugees navigate health insurance options and access consistent, culturally responsive care, because everyone deserves timely, informed healthcare as they build their new life in Northwest Arkansas. This program comes at a critical point in time, as people with the legal status of refugee will no longer have the right to access Medicaid effective October 1st. This policy change was implemented through H.R.1 also known as the “Big Beautiful Bill” which Congress passed in July of last year.

We are grateful for partners who share our mission of welcoming refugees and equipping them with what they need to build new lives.

Five years after the fall of Kabul, we’re reflecting on what happened, what followed, and what it has meant for the Afghan families who made Northwest Arkansas home.

In this reflection, Canopy’s own Khalid Ahmadzai shares a personal look at the past five years: from the urgency of resettling more than 250 Afghans in the months following the fall, to the lasting impact of a community that chose to keep showing up.

Because welcome doesn’t end when a family lands. It’s the long work of building a life, finding belonging, and becoming part of a community.

On behalf of the Board and the entire Canopy community, it is our pleasure to welcome Dr. Mukasa as our newest member of the Board of Directors.

While Dr. Mukasa is new to the board, he has been an essential part of Canopy since our founding. Dr. Mukasa’s background includes 24 years of dedicated years of service at the Arkansas Department of Health as Chief Epidemiologist, including 13 years as Arkansas’s State Refugee Health Coordinator. His deep expertise in refugee health, combined with his lifelong dedication to service, makes him a true champion for the work we do every day.

Canopy's mission is to create a community where refugees are welcomed and equipped with all they need to build new lives. Dr. Mukasa's knowledge and passion align closely with that mission, and we are truly grateful to have him join us in guiding Canopy's future.
