The Fayette County NAACP W.I.N.’s daily woman activist spotlight for Women’s history month, highlights Claudette Colvin, another trailblazer who showed us that courage doesn't have an age limit. Nine months before Rosa Parks, Claudette took a stand (by sitting down) for justice and human dignity, helping to spark the Civil Rights Movement.

For Women’s History Month, we honor the "hidden figures" who paved the way. Swipe through to learn about her quiet strength and unwavering conviction. ✨

As President of the Fayette County NAACP, I want to share an important update with our community.

Last Friday, the superintendent and the principal of Whitewater High School released a joint statement to parents regarding the September blackface incident. Their message acknowledged that the behavior seen at that game did not reflect the values of our school system and that steps must be taken to strengthen understanding and respect across all schools.

I have been working with the superintendent on the path forward because this situation has deeper roots. It is a cultural issue, and the response must protect every student and rebuild trust. As part of the plan, the district will launch a Cross Functional Action Team during the second semester. This group will review current practices, the Code of Conduct, and how we uphold dignity and respect at every Fayette County school and event.

The individuals who were not Whitewater students have already been banned from all FCBOE events, including graduation. That accountability step matters, but it is only one part of the work that needs to be done.

Parents continue to call for more diversity in leadership and in the classroom. These concerns are valid. Students should see themselves reflected in the people who support and guide them each day.

Yesterday, the NAACP reviewed video footage of the incident. No new information was uncovered beyond what we already knew.

We will keep pushing for transparency, safety, and real progress. Thank you to every family that continues to speak up. We hear you, and we are committed to seeing this through.

The ANF Follow-Up on the Whitewater High School Incident

Atlanta News First released a follow-up story today about the Whitewater High School “Blackface” incident, including the letter Dr. Patterson sent to families. I’m sharing it here along with the video for full transparency and to keep our community informed.

As President of the Fayette County NAACP, I want everyone to know we will continue to press for real accountability, clear consequences, and stronger protections for students who are harmed by these actions. This is about setting a standard for our schools and making sure every child feels safe, respected, and supported.

Our work is not about pointing fingers. It’s about addressing the issue honestly and pushing for change that reflects the values of this county. Thank you to everyone who has reached out, stood with us, and refused to let this be ignored. Together, we can move Fayette County forward.

Letter from Dr. Patterson (sent 11/14/25)

Dear Whitewater High School Community,

Following an incident at a Whitewater High School athletic event in September that did not reflect the values of our school system, we reiterated our commitment to learning from that experience and taking steps to strengthen understanding and respect across our schools. We want to assure you that this commitment remains a priority.

Over the past several weeks, district and school leaders have been meeting with community leaders and local partners. These conversations have provided a space for listening, reflecting, and identifying constructive ways to move forward. We are grateful for those who shared their perspectives so openly, helping us understand how our schools can better support every student and family.

As part of this work, we are reviewing resources that will strengthen the awareness of our staff and event workers. Our aim is to equip the adults who interact with and care for our students daily with practical tools. Looking ahead, a Cross Functional Action Team (XFAT) will be established during the second semester. This group will review current practices and recommend further steps to reinforce our shared expectations for dignity and respect at all Fayette County schools and events. We believe that shared solutions, created with input from those we serve, will lead to the strongest and most lasting change.

We are truly thankful for your continued trust, partnership, and support. Together, we remain committed to ensuring that every student, employee, parent, and visitor feels welcomed, respected and valued at Whitewater High School and throughout all Fayette County schools.

With appreciation,

Jonathan S. Patterson, Ph.D.

Superintendent, Fayette County Public Schools

Krystin Hall

Principal, Whitewater High School

🔥 “We are in the fierce urgency of right now.”

At Saturday night’s Freedom Fund Gala, our State President, Attorney Gerald Griggs, reminded us that this moment demands more than reflection. It demands action.

He didn’t speak about what the NAACP did in the 1920s, 30s, 40s, or even the 2000s. He reminded us of what we did just a few years ago, from 2016 to 2020. We fought battles against voter suppression, against division, and for democracy itself. And we won.

Let’s not fool ourselves. We have been here before. We are ready for this fight again. Georgia saved democracy twice, and we must be prepared to do it again.

This is the charge. This is the urgency. The time is now.
