The ANF Follow-Up on the Whitewater High School Incident
Atlanta News First released a follow-up story today about the Whitewater High School “Blackface” incident, including the letter Dr. Patterson sent to families. I’m sharing it here along with the video for full transparency and to keep our community informed.
As President of the Fayette County NAACP, I want everyone to know we will continue to press for real accountability, clear consequences, and stronger protections for students who are harmed by these actions. This is about setting a standard for our schools and making sure every child feels safe, respected, and supported.
Our work is not about pointing fingers. It’s about addressing the issue honestly and pushing for change that reflects the values of this county. Thank you to everyone who has reached out, stood with us, and refused to let this be ignored. Together, we can move Fayette County forward.

Letter from Dr. Patterson (sent 11/14/25)
Dear Whitewater High School Community,
Following an incident at a Whitewater High School athletic event in September that did not reflect the values of our school system, we reiterated our commitment to learning from that experience and taking steps to strengthen understanding and respect across our schools. We want to assure you that this commitment remains a priority.
Over the past several weeks, district and school leaders have been meeting with community leaders and local partners. These conversations have provided a space for listening, reflecting, and identifying constructive ways to move forward. We are grateful for those who shared their perspectives so openly, helping us understand how our schools can better support every student and family.
As part of this work, we are reviewing resources that will strengthen the awareness of our staff and event workers. Our aim is to equip the adults who interact with and care for our students daily with practical tools. Looking ahead, a Cross Functional Action Team (XFAT) will be established during the second semester. This group will review current practices and recommend further steps to reinforce our shared expectations for dignity and respect at all Fayette County schools and events. We believe that shared solutions, created with input from those we serve, will lead to the strongest and most lasting change.
We are truly thankful for your continued trust, partnership, and support. Together, we remain committed to ensuring that every student, employee, parent, and visitor feels welcomed, respected and valued at Whitewater High School and throughout all Fayette County schools.
With appreciation,
Jonathan S. Patterson, Ph.D.
Superintendent, Fayette County Public Schools
