This fall, we're really excited to be deploying a handful of Motus nanotags on Northern Saw-whet Owls in Arkansas! So far, we've been able to deploy 2 and hope to send the rest out this week.

These transmitters communicate with towers in the Motus Wildlife Tracking System, a cool open source project that aims to study movement ecology in migratory species.

One of our initial objectives will be to expand regional migratory owl research that was started in 2014 by Mitchell Pruitt and his MS advisor, Dr. Kim Smith.

We will continue monitoring Northern Saw-whet Owls and are seeking funding to establish a winter research program for Long-eared Owls in the region—yet another elusive migratory species!

Pre-2010s, saw-whet owls were not known regularly from the region. We now know they are migrants and winter residents here.

Long-eared Owls are still a great mystery and both species lack a conservation status across most of the Interior Highlands (and much of North America) due to lack of data. Our research will provide insight.

In honor of owl season starting next month, here’s a look back at 10 years of saw-whet owl research in Arkansas 🎉
