We are just so proud of the (Not) Work Week team that took on rejuvenating the Junkyard access! This one is for all of our volunteers!!! Stunninggg photos by

Were gonna say it again for the people in the back:

👥 218 volunteers

💛 Totaling $47,271 in kind contribution of volunteer labor
🧱 9,900 lbs of block →moved 3x to build a retaining wall

In May, our community showed up in a BIG way.

At (Not) Work Week, volunteers came together to put in real work at Junkyard — improving trails and investing in the places we all love to climb.

What exactly did that looked like? Well here’s a little rundown:

👥 Rallied roughly 67 individual volunteers, many were repeat daily offenders
💪 for a total of 1,308 volunteer hours.
💛 Totaling $47,271 in kind contribution of volunteer labor

This is what stewardship looks like.
And that momentum doesn’t stop here.
We’re rolling straight into summer with something special in the works 👀

Shout-Out to for supplying ALL the coffee for our Climber Coffee mornings with the Climber Stewards.

Weekend mornings, your Climber Stewards (Meghan and Alex) set up at the busiest crags with free coffee, cool climbing artifacts, guidebooks, plant and animal field guides, and a whole lotta stoke. Through and NRAC their job is to answer any and all questions you may have about climbing at the New, and maybe even answer some questions you haven’t thought of before!

This donation keeps us all fueled for the day and wakes us up for great conversation around how to respect our crags, fellow climbers, and local wildlife.

is owned and operated by our very own Kristi Buckley and Lukas Jaekel. They are both avid climbers, community organizers, and artists in their own right who have been behind-the-scenes pillars of our community. Check out their coffee, sick merch, and beautiful ceramics you can bring to Climber Coffee mornings to fill up for FREE!

Thanks again to them for their support!

Ever wonder what the deal is with that big Access Fund tent out at trail heads each weekend? Well, if you haven’t stopped by and said hello to our Climber Stewards, you are missing out! Not only on some delicious coffee, but trivia, prizes, and great conversation.

Meghan and Alex are our local climber stewards, and they love talking about anything NRG related. From climbing history to flora and fauna, Leave No Trace, best practices for climbing in the New, they’ve got you covered.

Since the New River Gorge became a National Park in 2020, climbing has exploded in the region, and NRAC has seen increased need for education and stewardship at our climbing areas. In an effort to mitigate some of the impacts of climbing and preserve our crags for generations to come, that’s where Access Fund comes in. The stewards are educational resources in the region, present to answer your questions as well as provide resources and opportunities to learn more about responsible recreation.

Swing by the table on weekend mornings and say hi, or catch them walking the crags in the afternoon. Stay tuned on our social media channels or through our newsletter to find out more about special events hosted by the stewards, such as trivia nights, trash clean ups, or trail days.

NRAC is delighted to announce that this year’s Dr. Paul Nelson Memorial Scholarship is open!

Paul transplanted from the mountains of Utah to West Virginia, bringing with him a passion for history, research and writing, a penchant for jazz and bluegrass, a deep respect for the preservation of wild spaces and a dedicated energy for storytelling and teaching.

Paul was generous with his information, “well, actually ...”, and possessed contagious enthusiasm and a wry sense of humor. He tolerated no BS and was up for pretty much any adventure in his path. He worked tirelessly for his middle school students, preserving the spirit of the gorge and supporting climbers and the Fayetteville community.

NRAC will award $1,000 to a student who exemplifies the passion that defined Paul’s life.

Preference will be given to students of any kind with history, music, teaching, or outdoor recreation interests, although all disciplines will be considered depending on the quality and originality of the application. Applicants will please include a statement describing how intended use of the scholarship would further the passion and values imbued by Paul Nelson and support the New River Gorge climbing community. This grant is open to any individual seeking post high school education, full or part time.

The application period is now open, and the deadline is August 1st, 2026! Link in bio 🔗

Here at the New River Gorge we revere quiet crushers: these are the folks out there doing what they do with low-key expertise, not spraying about it, just taking care of business, no big deal. Today we are here to do the spraying: we are crowning Brittany Chaber as the current Queen of the Quiet Crushers! Let us summarize why:

Back in 2016 Brittany observed that Gene was really good at leading (Not)Work Week, rallying volunteers, planning the trail projects, etc, but there were more details that were swamping him, so she just stepped right up and took them over: chasing sponsors, organizing meals, communicating with vols, ordering tee shirts, rounding up schwag—in short, making sure the whole complicated venture ran smoothly. She is a straight up logistics whiz which means the woman makes lists. Her organizational super powers have benefited NRAC in countless ways as their events calendar has expanded.

Brittany also quietly crushes in the biking world, frequently being spotted on local trails at the head of the fast girl pack, ripping up the steeps, slaying the technical bits. She also serves as the president of the Fayetteville Trails Coalition and has done more trailwork than you can shake a stick at. She is a powerful and elegant climber and a consistent trail runner, willing to brave all manner of bad weather to get her dogs out. She is a ridiculously good cook and a relaxed and gracious entertainer. Wise beyond her years, she is a devoted and supportive friend to many. And we haven’t even mentioned her preternatural ability to locate and win grants. She can even sew! Talk about crushing...

As Brittany steps down as co-manager of (Not)Work Week, we give her a shout-out for her huge contribution to making (Not)Work Week the fun, productive, soulful, family thing that it has become.

Brittany, you are the beating heart of it all!

Thanks for everything!

KAYA is becoming a super valuable tool for NRAC!

KAYA is a digital guidebook publisher, connecting climbers to the routes, parking, and trail data, and beta videos from the community.

The bouldering guidebook is authored by NRAC volunteers (Aaron and Stella) and the routes guidebook (in-progress) is being authored by our Executive Director, Nick Smith. Having some of our most dedicated developers and NRAC crew members behind the data ensures we can easily share the newest climbed lines, AND the most up-to-date access considerations.

Additionally, we used KAYA to aid in the scoring and guiding for the Pirate’s Cove Plunder—saving volunteer time and paper!

A portion of the proceeds from every guide goes back to NRAC, so by using the guide you’re also supporting our crags! Download it from the app/google play store and give it a try!
