Today’s Fayetteville Rotary program was a good one! Carol Foster, club member and Past District Governor for Rotary District 6780 introduced Tom Kale, our District Disaster Response & Relief Chair and District Fellowship Chair.

Tom is truly a Rotarian through and through with three generations strong, with his grandfather, father and now Tom carrying Rotary in their blood. He shared some great stories and challenged us to think about what role our local club can play when the next disaster strikes, while also reminding us that Rotary should be about more than meetings, it’s about relationships, service, fellowship and, most importantly, having fun along the way.

Tom and his wife Jay are a perfect Rotary match, and his passion for Rotary, motorcycles, disaster response and fellowship really came through today.

A great program and a great reminder of why we’re Rotarians! Rotary truly is about Service Above Self and having a little fun while we’re doing it! 🔴⚙️⚙️

Today’s Fayetteville Rotary Club program was a trip through the history of Fayetteville and Lincoln County!

Rotary President Phil Prichard introduced Jim Malone, calling him “part of the foundation of this town” before jokingly describing his presentation as “The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly” of Fayetteville’s history.

Jim took Rotarians on a journey through the rise of the local garment industry, which once made Fayetteville a nationally recognized manufacturing center. He shared how companies like Serbin helped shape the local economy, employing thousands of area residents and producing clothing for some of America’s most prestigious retailers, including Saks Fifth Avenue. Along the way, he shared personal stories about his father, James Malone, whose leadership and compassion left a lasting impact on both the company and its employees.

The presentation also explored the challenges our community faced through labor disputes, economic change, and the decline of domestic garment manufacturing. Jim reflected on Fayetteville’s unique history during the civil rights era, highlighting the leadership of local Black citizens who worked to preserve peace and strengthen the community during a pivotal time in American history.

Throughout his presentation, Jim reminded everyone that while Fayetteville has experienced many changes over the decades, its greatest strength has always been its people.

Thank you, Jim Malone, for preserving and sharing these stories that help us better understand where we’ve been and appreciate the community we call home.

As Phil Prichard was installed as 2026-2027 President of the Fayetteville Rotary Club last week, he was presented a watercolor painting by Outgoing President Lucy Williams in appreciation of his dedication to Rotary. The painting depicts the business he founded, Prichard’s Distillery in Kelso.

“A little more than a year ago, you accepted the 2026-27 Presidency,” said Lucy. “It has been an honor to serve as a fellow Rotarian with you, and now, it will be an honor to have you as our President. Thank you for accepting the nomination, going to PETS (President-Elect Training), and looking ahead to your year.

“We are excited to have you lead us … You have a great club, and we look forward to supporting you.”

Phil first joined Rotary in 1976 in Colorado, and in the years since coming to Lincoln County and joining the Fayetteville Rotary Club, he has been a leader in the club and in the community.

His love for America and his concern for the challenges facing our nation are well known in the club. In addition, he has shared with fellow Rotarians his personal journey with polio, a disease which Rotary has nearly eradicated worldwide. Phil’s story (Phil Prichard talking about Polio at Rotary April 2025 - YouTube) is a testament to resilience, advocacy, and the impact of Rotary’s mission.

When it comes to the Spirit of Rotary, few exemplify it better than Fayetteville Rotarian Carol Foster. She has twice served as President of our club, and in 2009-2010, she served as District Governor of Rotary District 6780, an area that includes 60 clubs across Middle and Eastern Tennessee. In addition, she has served Rotary in countless positions over the years.

During last week’s club meeting at Stone Bridge Park, Outgoing Rotary President Lucy Williams presented Carol with a watercolor painting, honoring her service to Rotary, her dedication to community, and her friendship.

“Carol, thank your help this year, for listening, for your advice, and for always going above and beyond for Rotary,” said Lucy as she made the presentation. “Your backyard is one of your happy places, and this painting is a tribute to you and your backyard where Buchanan Creek flows.”
