I thought it was important to share our purpose for those who haven’t had a chance to read our “About” information.
Second Chance Wildlife takes in native Ohio wildlife that is orphaned or injured. We provide the care they need to heal and grow, with the goal of releasing them back into the wild whenever possible.
Sadly, we cannot save every animal. Sometimes injuries are too severe, and humane euthanasia is the kindest way to prevent further suffering. As with our beloved domestic pets, sometimes the greatest act of compassion is letting them go peacefully rather than allowing them to suffer.
🐿️ The squirrel pictured here is one example of why we do what we do! Just a few short months ago, she was somehow covered in tar. Her recovery took time, patience, and effort, but she healed!
We treat our opossums and all wildlife with that same care and compassion. Rehabilitation includes important steps to prepare animals for successful releases, including time in pre-release cages to rebuild strength and adjust to the outdoors.
We know some people may view these enclosures as imprisonment, but that couldn't be further from our purpose. We are preparing these animals for life in the wild!
❤️ Our goal is always to do what is best for each animal and give them the best possible chance at a second chance in the wild. That is the heart of Second Chance Wildlife.

These incredible animals are tougher than they look. From surviving life’s challenges to caring for their babies, opossums are little warriors with BIG determination!

Rosie came in a little later in the season, so we were concerned about making sure she had enough time to grow, develop, and get back out into the wild before the colder temperatures arrive.

And what a year it has been! Between the storms, heat, flooding, and everything in between, the weather has affected wildlife in so many ways. 🌧️☀️🌊
Extreme weather can impact food availability, nesting, shelter, and the ability of young wildlife to survive and thrive. That’s why getting these little ones healthy and back into their natural environment at the right time is so important.
