Congratulations to Mark and Lori Shockley for being named Society Member of the year! They were among the originating members of the Mountain Home Three Rivers Chapter in 2017 and stepped up to run the chapter in 2019. The Three Rivers chapter is the only local chapter that is not affiliated with a Survey Research Station and run entirely with avocational archeological knowledge. They have unflagging enthusiasm for public outreach and avocational archeology and their good nature attracts participants to come along and learn together. They have participated in volunteer work at libraries, open labs, training programs, Greenbrier site, archeology month events, site stewardship and more. We appreciate their dedication and passion for archeology and for instilling that passion in their friends and community.
(You may have noticed they were awarded "member" of the year. If you know the Shockleys you know they operate as one unit!) 😆

Congratulations to George Sabo III! He was awarded the Society's highest honor, The McGimsey Preservation Award, recognizing his lifetime archievement in archeological preservation. We thank George for his service to the state of Arkansas in researching and preserving the archeological record and knowledge of Arkansas’s history.

Archaeologists said that they had found jars from a shipwreck as much as 4,700 years old, with black residue inside. Outside experts were skeptical but intrigued.

The Arkansas Archeological Survey hosted ArcheOlympics last Saturday. Competition was fierce, food was grilled, awards awarded and fun had by all. The AAS provided doorprizes and cook-out lunch. Thanks to all the teams and volunteers!

TONIGHT! Open Lab and Ko-ko-ci Meeting at the Arkansas Archeological Survey in Fayetteville. Open Lab 5-7 and Ko-ko-ci at 7:00 featuring Ashley Hansen presenting "Past, Present, and Future of Rock Art on Petit Jean Mountain." "Petit Jean Mountain has long been known for its unusually high concentration of rock art. For thousands of years, the majority of pictographs were hidden away in hard-to-reach places within the rugged terrain of the mountain. Recently, access to these pictographs has changed due to new developments of hiking trails and rock-climbing routes within Petit Jean State Park. This presentation will discuss the efforts that have been made to mitigate harm to these invaluable cultural resources and explore how the future of rock art on the mountain might look."

Starting at 5:00 pm the Survey hosts Open Lab- you can help prep artifacts for storage followed by the Archeological Society local chapter Ko-kō-çi meeting at 7:00. Ashley Hansen will present "Past, Present, and Future of Rock Art on Petit Jean Mountain." You don't have to be a member to attend the meeting. See you then!
