💙 Our Story, Our Mission 💙

Many of you joined this page years ago to support Ian as he courageously battled Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (a rare genetic heart disease) and later Sarcoma cancer. Your love, prayers, and generosity helped Ian and our family through some of the toughest seasons of our lives. For that, we will always be grateful. 🙏

For those just discovering our page, here’s a little of Ian’s journey:

Ian is a 44-year-old husband, father of four, brother in a large family, and friend to many. In 2002, he was diagnosed with Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy, the same rare disease that took the lives of two of his siblings. Over the years, he endured four pacemaker/defibrillator surgeries, but his heart condition continued to progress.

In 2011, Ian was told that his only chance for survival was a heart transplant. By the end of 2012, he was officially placed on the transplant list. But in 2018, life threw another curveball — Ian was diagnosed with Sarcoma, a rare cancer of the soft tissues. Because of the cancer diagnosis, he was removed from the transplant list and spent the next six years in grueling treatments.

In June 2024, Ian finally heard the words: cancer remission. 🎉 But due to medical requirements, he must remain cancer-free for five years before being considered again for a heart transplant. While that wait continues, Ian has chosen not to sit still — but to act.

✨ Hearts of Steel ✨ is Ian’s vision to take what was once his personal fight and turn it into a lifeline for others. Our mission is to:

Raise awareness for rare heart diseases like Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy.

Place AED machines in communities that lack them.

Encourage children battling heart disease or cancer with care packages and support.

Provide financial relief (gift cards, small grants) for families affected when a parent suffers from heart disease.

Ian’s story began this mission, but now it’s about something greater — a community of fighters, survivors, families, and supporters who believe in turning struggle into strength.

Thank you for standing with Ian, and now with the many others who will benefit from this work. Your support has always been the heartbeat of this page. Together, we’ll keep it strong. 💪❤️

Yesterday's update - Out of hospital but back for follow-up. We are still in rhythm but have some things to address from the results of his Echo. We also have found out his Ejection Fraction has dropped, so we have more follow-ups to come to help maintain his symptoms and heart pressures. Thank you guys!

Day 2 at the Dr but they both smiling because no matter how bad it is or seems he always has a good plan for our heart hero. Not just addressing his kidney failure but his overall health. 10 years and counting with this guy and we totally trust him with Ian's life. The best doctor ❤️ ever! If you need a great Nephrologist, Dr. Roderick Woodson is your guy.
