Meet our first honoree.
Debora Hudson is receiving the LEGACY OF SERVICE AWARD at the inaugural Juneteenth Heritage Awards & Brunch.
Twenty-five years in our classrooms. Years of service on the Board of Aldermen. A lifetime spent lifting the families of Spring Lake. Ms. Debora has given to this town across every season of her life — without ever needing to be the loudest person in the room. That's exactly what this award is for.
She shows up. Every time.
Commissioner Sona L. Cooper is receiving the COMMUNITY EXCELLENCE AWARD at the inaugural Juneteenth Heritage Awards & Brunch.
Since 2017, Commissioner Soña L. Cooper has carried Spring Lake through its hardest fiscal chapter — and out the other side. She stepped up as Mayor Pro Tem when it mattered most. The voters returned her to the board in November because they remember who showed up. And she's the kind of leader who'll still stop mid-block to talk to a neighbor.
That's community
Vision rooted here. Reaching far beyond.
Dr. Antoinne Duane Jones — Fayetteville State alumnus and founder of ADJ Media — is receiving the CREATIVE VISIONARY AWARD at the inaugural Juneteenth Heritage Awards & Brunch.
More than seventeen years behind the camera. Founder of Majority Greek Magazine and the Pearly Awards. Author of The Down Entrepreneur. A man whose creative vision was rooted in this region and built into a career that now reaches far beyond it — through the lens, the page, and the stage, lifting Black excellence into the light.
We're honored to bring him home to be celebrated on June 21st.
Honoring the work that keeps our story whole.
The CULTURAL PRESERVATION AWARD at the inaugural Juneteenth Heritage Awards & Brunch will be presented to the Sandhills Family Heritage Association — in honor of its founder, the late Ammie Jenkins.
For more than two decades, SFHA has reconnected African American families to the land, history, and heritage of the Sandhills. The Farmers Market. Sankofa Youth. Deerfield Cemetery. The Civic Center renovation. The work continues because Ms. Ammie built it to.
We are honored to recognize this organization publicly, by name, in front of our community.
Heritage you can taste.
Legacy Rolls — the family kitchen of Jerry and Justin Canada — is receiving the ECONOMIC EMPOWERMENT AWARD at the inaugural Juneteenth Heritage Awards & Brunch.
A father and son built a business in Spring Lake on a 150-year-old family recipe. A recipe carried forward through generations — "my grandfather remembers his grandfather making them for him." That single sentence is the entire Juneteenth narrative: freedom delayed, freedom claimed, freedom kept by hand, generation after generation, in the form of bread.
Rooted in truth. Rising in possibility. Come celebrate them with us.
