SU honor students Rory Levinson, Taylor Stubitsch, Maya Philips, Katherine Monroe, Isabella Brown, and Jordan Campanelli spent the afternoon touring Three Falls Woods with Paul Porter, Director of Stewardship, and Jack Gramlich, long-time CNYLT volunteer. Diana Green demolished this invasive common buckthorn (Rhamnus cathartica) root system. She and several other members of the Friends of Pleasant Valley have made it their mission to eradicate or at least put a serious dent in the buckthorn population at this important wetland, which encompasses part of the west branch of Onondaga Creek. Our staff and volunteers know the risk these invasives pose, and they are taking advantage of the wet ground to pull out the lateral root systems that threaten to transform the diverse wetland to a monoculture. If any of you know Diana Green, you know these buckthorn don't stand a chance!

Diana is one of the founding members of the Friends of Pleasant Valley, and was instrumental in helping us save this preserve. She is a retired social studies teacher from Fayetteville Manlius High School, and founder of their Anthropology Class and Anthropology Club.
