The National Association of Black Social Workers (NABSW) joins the family of Nolan Xavier Wells and communities across this nation in calling for truth, transparency, and accountability surrounding his tragic death.

Nolan was an 18-year-old Black college student and athlete whose life ended under circumstances that continue to leave his family with profound and painful questions. After traveling with friends to Horn Island, Mississippi, over the July 4th holiday, Nolan did not return home with the group. His body was discovered two days later.

In September, a Jackson County grand jury concluded that there was insufficient evidence of criminal conduct and declined to bring charges. Yet significant questions remain. Both the state medical examiner's autopsy and an independent examination commissioned by Nolan's family classified the cause and manner of his death as undetermined. The state autopsy also documented contusions to the back of Nolan's head.

Nolan's family and their legal representatives continue to seek answers and have called for further federal scrutiny of the circumstances surrounding his death.

For NABSW, this is about more than one investigation. It is about the fundamental principle that Black lives deserve to be valued, protected, investigated with rigor, and treated with dignity.
