Some of the most difficult pediatric cases are the ones that do not immediately reveal what is happening.

At Pediatric Symposium 2026, keynote speaker Sharon Cooper, MD, will present:

Covert Crises: Identifying and Intervening in Familial Sexual Trafficking

Dr. Cooper has practiced medicine for 50 years and is CEO of Developmental & Forensic Pediatrics, P.A. Her work spans child maltreatment, developmental disabilities, child sexual exploitation, forensic consultation, research, and professional education.

She has provided testimony on child sexual exploitation to the U.S. Congress and international agencies, contributed extensively to the medical literature on child maltreatment, and trained professionals around the world in recognizing and responding to exploitation.

Her keynote will bring that experience directly to frontline pediatric professionals in Southeastern North Carolina.

Trauma can affect anyone, but for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD), its impact may be complex and sometimes difficult to recognize.

Trauma-Informed Care and I/DD explores the intersection of trauma and intellectual/developmental disabilities and provides practical approaches for creating safer, more responsive systems of support.

Through research, case studies, and evidence-based approaches, participants will examine how trauma may present in individuals with I/DD and explore strategies for building resilience, preventing crises, and responding to trauma-related needs.

This program is designed for social workers, therapists, school staff, I/DD habilitation programs, care coordinators, family support programs, families, and other professionals supporting individuals with I/DD.

After the storm passes, the emergency may not be over.

Floods, hurricanes, extreme heat, and other disasters can affect children long after the immediate event. The CDC notes that children may develop symptoms of anxiety, depression, or post-traumatic stress following a disaster.

For pediatric professionals, recovery means considering more than physical safety.

Changes in sleep, behavior, mood, school performance, relationships, or persistent fear may be part of a child’s response to what they experienced. The American Academy of Pediatrics emphasizes that pediatric clinicians can play an important role in supporting children’s mental health before, during, and after disasters.

When a student appears impaired, recognizing that something is wrong is only the first step. Knowing what to observe and how to respond appropriately matters.

Drug Impairment Training for Educational Professionals (DITEP) provides educational professionals with a systematic approach to recognizing signs and symptoms that may be associated with drug impairment and responding to concerns within the educational environment.

Develop greater awareness of drug categories and effects, observable indicators of impairment, assessment considerations, and the importance of appropriate documentation and intervention.

Strengthen your ability to recognize concerns early and support safer school communities.

Knowing the principles of Motivational Interviewing is one thing. Applying them effectively when a conversation becomes challenging requires practice.

When an individual is uncertain about change, hesitant to move forward, or expressing conflicting priorities, how you respond can shape what happens next.

**Advancing Your Motivational Interviewing (MI) Practice: An Interactive Skill Building Workshop** provides an opportunity to strengthen practical communication skills for navigating these conversations while maintaining a collaborative, person-centered approach.

Continue building the skills to listen intentionally, respond thoughtfully, and help individuals explore their own path toward change.

Aging Gracefully: Empowering Individuals Across the Lifespan brings together healthcare professionals, community partners, direct-care staff, and caregivers for a multidisciplinary day of learning focused on issues affecting older adults and the people who support them.

Expand your perspective, strengthen your knowledge, and connect learning to the individuals and communities you serve.

The question is not simply, “How much time are you spending online?”

For adolescents, social media can be a source of connection, identity, information, stress, comparison, harassment, or crisis. The impact is not the same for every young person.

That makes the clinical conversation important.

Recent guidance from the American Academy of Pediatrics encourages clinicians to approach social media use with curiosity and without judgment, paying attention to problematic use, harmful experiences, and the individual adolescent’s mental health.

At Pediatric Symposium 2026, Hudaisa Hafeez, MD, will present:

Effective Motivational Interviewing is not about persuading someone to change. It is about creating the conditions for meaningful conversation.

When individuals are uncertain, hesitant, or weighing competing priorities, the way a professional responds can influence whether the conversation moves forward or becomes another exchange of advice.

Advancing Your Motivational Interviewing (MI) Practice: An Interactive Skill Building Workshop provides an opportunity to strengthen the communication skills that help individuals explore their own motivations, values, and reasons for change.

Move beyond simply talking about MI and continue developing how you use it in practice.
