Cumberland County will open Smith Recreation Center, 1520 Slater Ave. in Fayetteville as a shelter at 4 p.m. today in preparation for impending winter weather. This shelter will be available from Thursday at 4 p.m. until noon on Sunday.

Although all Cumberland County residents are welcome, the intent for this warming shelter is for individuals who have no other shelter options during a winter weather event. Meals will be provided, but unfortunately due to a lack of staff because of COVID-19 and position vacancies, pets will not be allowed to be housed at the shelter.

COVID-19 screening will occur for individuals entering the shelter. Isolation and quarantine areas will be available for individuals either testing positive or are experiencing COVID-19 symptoms. Social distancing, masking and all Centers for Disease Control guidelines will be adhered to at the shelter.

Residents may also follow Cumberland County social media for important updates and information.
