🚨🚨HELP WANTED?!🚨🚨

Hey, quick question: Can anyone explain why this consulting firm advertised this “immediate start” job opening three days ago (June 12th) to support a “hyperscale data center construction project in Fayetteville, NC?” Meanwhile, City Council continues to drag their feet and does everything NOT to pursue a moratorium despite massive public outcry.

As we all go into the weekend following a very busy week, our Steering Committee member, Angela A Tatum, had some things to share about the City and County’s approach to data centers and future City Council elections.

Don’t forget that we will meet on Monday, June 15th at 6:45p for the Cumberland County, NC Government meeting. Until then, share your thoughts about the direction the county is taking and the direction the city is taking.

🚨 BREAKING NEWS 🚨 Cumberland County, NC Government will hold a vote on a 6 month data center moratorium on June 15 at 6:45 PM! The moratorium is expected to pass with widespread bi-partisan support from the Board of Commissioners.

Please note: if the County passes a moratorium, it will only affect unincorporated areas in the County. Each city/town still has to pass their own moratorium for it to apply in City/Town limits. EDIT: Towns/cities in the County can use the same moratorium language as the County’s, but they still have to go through their Public hearing process and adopt.

Cumberland County commissioners to resume discussion of their proposed moratorium on data centers on Thursday. They could vote on Monday.

Charlotte City Council on Monday night unanimously approved a 150-day moratorium on new data centers.

Council member Victoria Watlington said the pause will give the city time to gather more information before making long-term decisions about growth.

“When we can agree on the facts, then we can talk about good policy,” Watlington said. “I think that’s exactly what this 150-day moratorium will do — give us an opportunity to come to the table together to review and understand and align on the facts, and then decide what’s best for our community, because ultimately we determine how it grows.”

Community members have raised concerns about the potential for rising electricity bills, higher water use, noise and other data center side effects on neighborhoods.

Over 100+ Fayetteville residents PACKED the Council Chambers, the overflow room, and lined up outside City Hall. The rooms were at capacity and many residents couldn’t get inside. The Council voted 8-2 to set a public hearing for the UDO changes on August 10, instead of passing a data center moratorium. The Council’s 120 day pause on passing a moratorium expires one day after, on August 11.

In light of recent revelations related to an incident that occurred on Saturday at a Councilmember's place of work, Fayetteville Freedom For All has decided to pull out of the Data Center rally this evening. We still intend to pack the City Council meeting in anticipation of tonight's vote, but we will not participate in the rally itself.

Our organization prides itself on engaging elected officials and organizing the community around issues they care about in a healthy, productive, and democratic matter. We were not involved in the planning or promoting of the protest that occurred on Saturday that was organized by another individual / group that are also opposing changes to the UDO. We do not condone what’s being described as political bullying and we've decided to pull out of this rally in order to protect the integrity and reputation of our work.

We still encourage the public to contact their elected officials about these proposed changes and to attend the City Council Meeting tonight at 6:30 PM.
