The Modern-Day Prayer Movement: This Has Never Happened Before by Matthew Lilley

Since a “spark” in 1999, a bonfire of prayer has swept the earth. Thousands of new prayer ministries and movements have been launched. What is happening in the 21st century has never happened before. It is a true “movement” without a central location or human leader. The Holy Spirit is stirring believers across denominations, nations, and generations to seek the Lord with new, creative, and extravagant expressions of prayer. It is so widespread that it is difficult to track.

If God is awakening prayer, we can expect an outpouring of His Spirit to follow. As Jonathan Edwards said, “When God has something very great to accomplish for His church, it is His will that there should precede it the extraordinary prayers of His people.”

As Malachi 1:11 indicates, incense (prayer) and pure offerings (worship) will arise in “every place” around the world, leading to God’s name being great among the nations (missions).

For from the rising of the sun, even to its going down, my name shall be great among the Gentiles; In every place incense shall be offered to My name, and a pure offering; For My name shall be great among the nations,” Says the Lord of hosts. Malachi 1:11

That is exactly what is happening. On the heels of this modern-day prayer movement, the Gospel is going forth to the nations in incredible ways, particularly in the Global South and in closed nations. Bible translation is moving forward in nearly every language. Disciple-making movements are multiplying the number of believers amongst unreached people groups. As we move towards the fulfillment of the Great Commission, it is clear that prayer is fueling the advancement of God’s kingdom.

Proverbs is a book of practical wisdom. It deals not only with ultimate things, such as the worship of God, but also with day-to-day realities we face. One of the major topics of Proverbs is money. A variety of synonyms are used to discuss this topic, including gold, treasure, silver, jewels, wealth, plunder, gain, riches, property, and many others.

I was curious to know the overall teaching of Proverbs on money, so I examined every mention of money and wealth, along with their synonyms and antonyms (like poverty), in the book of Proverbs.

As we saw recently, radical generosity is one of the clearest evidences of the Spirit's outpouring. At the same time, moves of the Spirit tend to see temptations related to money. In our modern day, many notable ministries have been scandalized because of unrighteous dealings with money.

Good habits formed early can lead to long-term prosperity, health, and thriving. However, some alluring prospects are so deceptive and destructive that one false move can ruin a lifetime of wise and steady progress. For instance, a lifetime of healthy eating and exercise is canceled out by tripping just once over the edge of a cliff.

In terms of money, Proverbs teaches us both how to rightly grow wealth and how to avoid sudden catastrophe."
