Training Operations Scheduled Along the Appomattox River

Residents near the Appomattox River should be aware that US Military Innovative Readiness Training will take place March 23 through March 27 in the Prospect area, in the river between VA-609 and VA-608. This training helps to prepare our military professionals for natural disasters that may affect our community. During the training, small explosive charges will be used to remove logjams from the river channel to reduce local flooding and erosion and improve the health of the Appomattox River and the Chesapeake Bay.

Residents and visitors are asked to avoid the river between these river crossings during the training week. Occasional sounds similar to thunder may be heard, and minor vibrations may occur during controlled detonations. These activities are safe and carefully managed by highly specialized military personnel. Law enforcement and emergency response personnel in Farmville and surrounding counties are aware of the training.

The Friends of the Appomattox River, a local non-profit organization with a mission to protect the health of the Appomattox River, has helped to coordinate these training missions since 1998.
