Farmville Community Garden

Farmville Community Garden Farmville, North Carolina community gardening group The garden produced watermelon, squash, pumpkin, collards, and tomatoes.

After months of dedicated effort to secure land, water, seeds, and hours of volunteer labor, the first harvest of the Rooted in Community Garden of Farmville, NC was gathered in September, 2016. The volunteers are driven by a passion for growing organic, edible foods to nourish the community spirit and the health of Farmville, NC. Produce is used to serve guests at the daily soup kitchen in town a

nd shared by the volunteers who plow, plant, w**d and water the garden. The results to date are truly the result of widespread community engagement. The land and water are supplied by the Town of Farmville. Master gardeners have provided seeds, advice, and labor. The executive committee of Rooted in Community has connected with the Boy Scouts, after-school programs and the senior center. The next step in the garden is to build accessible raised beds for seniors and those with physical limitations. The garden site is wheelchair accessible. By providing raised beds, eager seniors will be able to enjoy the therapeutic benefits of gardening and fresh produce. With the raised beds in place and the existing plots continuing, the community garden will truly be fulfilling the mission of Rooted in Community. The garden will reach everyone from youth to seniors regardless of physical ability and will encourage learning and growth towards a healthier future.

What an amazing time!

Last night the Farmville Food Hub hosted the Juniors of Girl Scout Troop 1829 for an engaging discussion about food assistance efforts in our community. The Girl Scouts are working on their Bronze Award and want to find ways to make food more accessible in their community. They had the opportunity to take a walking tour of Farmville to see a blessing box and sample fresh veggies at the Farmville Community Garden. We love being able to share with others about the wonderful things happening in our community! 😀 Danika J. A. Cooper
