Big conversations about the future of museums are coming to our small town!

October 24โ€“26, the Robert Russa Moton Museum and Longwood University will help welcome representatives from 30 organizations across the Mid-Atlantic region to Farmville, Virginia, for the Museum Store Association's Mid-Atlantic Chapter Fall Meeting.

We're especially proud that Moton's own Sherre Oke, Assistant Director for Visitor Engagement and Operations, serves as President of the MSA Mid-Atlantic Chapter and is helping bring this regional gathering to our community.

Under the theme Seizing the Moment: Designing Museum Experiences that Ignite the Next Generation, museum professionals will come together for professional development, collaboration, and conversations about museum retail, visitor engagement, and inspiring future generations.

Here at Moton, participants will have an opportunity to experience our history firsthand and explore how the stories museums preserve can inspire meaningful products and experiences for younger audiences.

And while the professional connections will be valuable, we're just as excited about what our visitors will discover beyond the meeting rooms!

From our rich history and cultural landmarks to our locally owned businesses and welcoming community, Farmville has a story worth sharing. This gathering is an opportunity to introduce museum professionals from across the region to the people, places, and experiences that make our town special.

To our visiting museum colleagues, welcome to Farmville! We're delighted to have you here and look forward to sharing a little of what makes this community so special.

And to our Farmville neighbors, we hope you'll join us in extending a warm welcome to our guests!

Weโ€™ve just received word that, due to unforeseen circumstances, The Making of Being Eddie with Angus Wall, scheduled for this Thursday, October 1, will need to be postponed.

We know many of you were looking forward to this evening at Moton. So were we.

Plans are already underway to find a new date, and weโ€™ll share it as soon as itโ€™s confirmed.

Thank you for understandingโ€”and please help spread the word to anyone who planned to join us Thursday.

Smile. Say hello. Meet someone new. Check on a neighbor. Share a little kindness.

The spirit of neighboring runs throughout the Moton story. We know the difference people can make when they show up for one another, open doors, lend a hand and care about what happens in their community.

What are some ways we can be good neighbors today?

Need a few ideas? National Good Neighbor Day has plentyโ€”from Neighborhood Bingo and postcards to 101 small ways to connect.

"America, be true to what you said on paper."
โ€” Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

As we commemorate America250 and celebrate the Fourth of July, we honor the enduring promise of libertyโ€”and the generations of Americans who have worked to ensure that promise belongs to everyone.

If you're looking for a meaningful stop during your Fourth of July celebrations, we'd love to welcome you to the Robert Russa Moton Museum. With today's heat wave, it's the perfect time to step inside, cool off, and discover the powerful story of the students whose courage helped change our nation.

We're open today from 12โ€“4 PM. Admission is free, and everyone is welcome.

Today, museums around the world are being recognized for the role they play in preserving history, inspiring dialogue, and helping communities better understand one another.

This yearโ€™s theme, โ€œMuseums Uniting a Divided World,โ€ feels especially meaningful here at the Robert Russa Moton Museum.

While the museum celebrates 25 years in 2026, the Moton story began generations before the museum itself.

In 1920, during the Jim Crow South, Black women in Prince Edward County organized the Farmville Council of Colored Women under the leadership of Martha E. Forrester. They advocated for better educational opportunities for Black children at a time when segregation and inequality shaped nearly every part of daily life.

Their efforts helped lead to the construction of Robert Russa Moton High School in 1939.

Then in 1951, students inside this very building helped change the nation.

Led by 16-year-old Barbara Rose Johns, Moton students organized a strike protesting overcrowded classrooms and unequal conditions. Their courage led to Davis v. County School Board of Prince Edward County, one of the five cases consolidated into Brown v. Board of Education, the landmark Supreme Court decision that declared segregation in public schools unconstitutional.

Then came Massive Resistance.

Rather than integrate, Prince Edward County closed its public schools from 1959 to 1964, leaving many Black students without formal education for years. Yet the community continued fighting for education, justice, and opportunity.

And this building survived.

In the 1990s, when the former school faced possible demolition, the Martha E. Forrester Council of Women stepped forward once again to help preserve the building and protect the history connected to these halls.

Today, the building itself is the artifact.

On April 23, 2001, exactly 50 years after the student strike, the Robert Russa Moton Museum officially opened as a place of education, reflection, and dialogue.

What began as a former segregated school building is now:
โ–ช๏ธ A National Historic Landmark
โ–ช๏ธ Located on the U.S. Civil Rights Trail
โ–ช๏ธ An affiliated area of the Brown v. Board of Education National Historical Park through the National Park Service
โ–ช๏ธ Home to the permanent exhibition โ€œThe Moton School Story: Children of Courageโ€
โ–ช๏ธ Home to the award-winning Barbara Rose Johns Story digital project
โ–ช๏ธ A Virginia History Affiliate with the Virginia Museum of History & Culture
โ–ช๏ธ Part of an ongoing UNESCO World Heritage nomination effort recognizing nationally significant Civil Rights sites across the United States

But beyond the designations and honors, Moton remains what it has always been at its core, a place of courage, learning, reflection, survivorship, and hope.

Students still walk these halls and discover the power of young voices. Families reconnect with stories once nearly erased. Visitors from across the country and around the world step inside a building where ordinary people helped change American history.

As we celebrate International Museum Day, we also celebrate every museum, archive, cultural center, and historic site working each day to preserve our shared human story.
