Enable Madison County recently built a custom wheelchair ramp for seven-year-old survivor of / Reina McLemore.

Reina lives with a feeding tube and a severe form of epilepsy from her injuries, and the new ramp has provided a safer, more accessible way for Reina to come in and out of her home to attend school, spend time outdoors, and take part in day-to-day activities. Her grandparents have expressed how the improvement has significantly eased the physical toll of lifting her and her wheelchair down the stairs, and increased the family’s independence.

We are inspired by the work of Enable Madison County to help provide families with accessibility and support, and by the resilience of Reina and her family. Read the full story by WAAY-TV at https://bit.ly/custom-wheelchair-ramp

The NCSBS is excited to spotlight one of our keynote speakers for the Twentieth International Conference on Shaken Baby Syndrome/Abusive Head Trauma, Andrea Dunlop, author and creator and host of Nobody Should Believe Me, a true crime podcast about the intersection of medicine and child abuse.

How did so many people become convinced that the science behind abusive head trauma has been "debunked"? This keynote presentation examines how science denialism techniques borrowed from the to***co and climate wars have been systematically applied to child abuse medicine, and how a coordinated advocacy ecosystem translates fringe medical opinions into viral new stories, Netflix documentaries, legislative action, and court verdicts.

By examining case studies from media coverage in NBC, Serial podcast, and the Netflix film Take Care of Maya, participants will learn to identify the structural features of manufactured controversy, understand how journalism incentives make even well-intentioned reporters vulnerable to these narratives, and develop concrete strategies for pushing back effectively in professional and public contexts.
