The Same Sky

Genesis‬ ‭1‬‬:‭7‬-‭8‬ ‭NIV
7 So God made the vault and separated the water under the vault from the water above it. And it was so. 8 God called the vault “sky.” And there was evening, and there was morning—the second day.

Looking up at a clear blue sky I am reminded of the above verse. God wanted to separate the waters above from below so He created a vault and called it the sky.
What an amazing creation the sky is. It is ever changing, yet always the same. It can be a bright blue or dark gray. You can see the beauty of a thunder cloud or the power of fast moving clouds. The sky brings the water from heaven in rain, snow, or ice. It effortlessly holds the sun, moon, and stars.
We see different aspects of the sky, but it is always the same sky. We know it will always be there, a great reminder that God is always there. We experience the different attributes of God, not always in ways we desire just as there are cloudy and rainy days. Through our faith and truths in the Bible we know that even on the cloudy and rainy days, God is present with us and always the same. Take some time today to look up to the sky, we all maybe seeing something different but it is same sky. Be reminded that we experience God in different ways each day, but He is the same God to us all on good days and bad.

Are You Sure?

Mark 10:38 NIV
38 “You don’t know what you are asking,” Jesus said. “Can you drink the cup I drink or be baptized with the baptism I am baptized with?”

Be careful of what you ask for! I heard this once or twice from my mother growing up. She wanted me to be sure I understood what went along with what I was asking for. In today’s verses, Jesus is saying the same thing to the disciples, “You don’t know what you are asking”. He was warning James and John that there was more to following Him than just the glory and honor they were looking for. He wanted them to know that there would be struggles, pain, hardship, and hatred if they chose to sit next to Him.
Many times we don’t consider or overlook the consequences or potential dangers when we ask God for something. Maybe we want a promotion, seeking more money and prestige, yet overlook the longer hours and stress that come with the promotion. Someone may ask for a certain relationship to become more than a friendship, not realizing that the person isn’t a good match.
Just like my mom, Jesus wants us to think about what we are asking for, what we desire; being prepared for what goes along with what we are asking for, what sacrifices we may have to make.
Take a moment and think about what you have been asking for, what you want, are you willing to make the possible sacrifices to get it?

Life In the Desert

Isaiah‬ ‭35‬‬:‭1‬ ‭NIV
1 The desert and the parched land will be glad; the wilderness will rejoice and blossom.

We are in the Sonoran Desert and it is very dry and very hot. Everything's seems brown and dead from a distance, yet when you stop and look a little closer there is life. There are cacti blooming, birds chirping, and the tiniest bit of greenery here and there. What appears dead and desolate is alive and thriving.
Our lives can seem like deserts at times. We feel empty and desolate with little joy to be found. One problem after leaves us with little hope, however we don't stay that way for long when we look to the Lord.
When we are lost in a desolate place , dry and thirst for life, God is there waiting to give us a drink and a life filled with hope, joy, and love. He always provides us will a gleamer of hope just as the flowering cacti in the desert. He provides us new life, a sense of belonging, and the promise to never be desolate again.
Does your life seem like a desert? Call out to God and look around you. He has given you moments of hope, glimpses of new life, and is ready to fill you full when you ask. The desert and the parched land will be glad and so will we!

God Is Here

Exodus‬ ‭32‬‬:‭1‬ ‭NIV
1 When the people saw that Moses was so long in coming down from the mountain, they gathered around Aaron and said, “Come, make us gods who will go before us. As for this fellow Moses who brought us up out of Egypt, we don’t know what has happened to him.”

I was watching the sunrise this morning until the clouds completely covered the sun. I could no longer see it or feel its warmth, but I knew the sun was still there. I didn't have to see it to trust that it was still in the sky because of my knowledge and experience, but what about child who didn't know or understand where the sun went. They may think the sun had left or fallen from the sky.
The Israelites were like a child when it came to knowing that God was still there even when they couldn't see Him. Even though God had guided them by pillars of cloud and fire, when they didn't see that or Moses, they thought they had been abandoned. They quickly resorted back to worshipping an idol, something they could see, until Moses returned and they learned a hard lesson.
People today are no different than the Israelites, we want to see to believe and when life doesn't goes as we think it should, we often question if God is really with us hearing our prayers. Yet just like the sun, God has proven over the centuries that He never leaves our side. We may not see Him or even hear Him, but He is still there. We have our past experiences as well as those in the Bible to remind us that God is always with us and we can share those with others so they too can begin to trust that God is with them always.
Our VBS main verse was "God is with you wherever you go - Joshua 1:9" Memorize this verse and share it with others. Just as we know the sun is there even when it is dark, so God is with us always.

Who's the Favorite

1 Corinthians‬ ‭12‬:‭13‬ NIV
13 For we were all baptized by one Spirit so as to form one body—whether Jews or Gentiles, slave or free—and we were all given the one Spirit to drink.

"I am Mom's favorite", "She loves me more". Did you ever say theses words growing up or do your children say them now. We want to know we are loved and it is human nature to want to be the "favorite". We want to receive the most of what is being handed out; we want to have the best job and we want the most recognition. We even do it at church. We seek the most prestigious tasks, the ones that get the most recognition. We want to be God's favorite.
In today's verse, Paul reminds us that God doesn't play favorites and no task, job, or gift is any more special than another. It doesn't matter where we come from or what our past is, God fills us all with the same Spirit as we accept Christ as our Savior.
Just as God shows no favoritism with the giving of the Holy Spirit, so His does in the giving of talents or gifts to each of us. We all make up the body of Christ and no part is more important than another. One gift may be more visible than another, such as preaching or missions, but that doesn't make it any more necessary than the gift of service - someone working behind the scenes to make things run smoothly. As one body we all are necessary to be the hands and feet of Christ from the preacher to the janitor or from praise band to the cook, each of us is just as important to God.
The next time you start to think that you are God's favorite or you think your gift is more important than another's, read 1 Corinthians 12. It takes each and every one of us to make up the body of Christ!
