Sarah Barton Murphy Chapter DAR, Farmington, Missouri

Sarah Barton Murphy Chapter DAR, Farmington, Missouri Non-Profit Organization in Farmington, MO O. A. Nichols, Wednesday afternoon, March 11, 1914, with fourteen present. Mrs. of Tennessee.

The Sarah Barton Murphy Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution at Farmington, Missouri, was organized at the home of Mrs. Nichols was appointed local regent for the purpose of organizing this chapter. This chapter was very fittingly named for Sarah Barton Murphy, wife of Reverend William Murphy, Sr. In 1798, he came to the Spanish held territory, west of the Mississippi River, in orde

r to stake a land claim. The Reverend Murphy died en route back to his home on the banks of the Holston River in Eastern Tennessee. Undaunted by even so great a loss as her life's companion, Mrs. Murphy, her three sons, and their families returned in 1803 to receive the land claim. This first white settlement was called “Murphy's Settlement” until the Missouri Territory became a state in 1821. It is an honor to have the Chapter bear the name of this noble pioneer woman.

I will send out an email in case you don’t see it here but there will be NO 4th of July parade in Farmington that our DARlings can attend. I have been in touch with City people. Best we can do is to put out our flags and maybe look forward to Veterans Day parade. They will have that. So looking forward to any future plans.

Young Audrey heeded our earlier call for photos of our Great American Birthday Quilt Block at the Colonial Williamsburg Visitor Center. She found it and sent along pictures of our block, the quilt's explanatory plaque, and a view showing how the 500-foot quilt is displayed at the visitor center. Thank you for letting us see the quilt and quilt block through your eyes, Audrey!

As a bonus, she shared a picture of one of the lanterns hanging from the interactive Liberty Tree exhibit at the American Revolution Museum in Yorktown. Visitors are invited to write a message about what liberty means to them, and then the message is displayed on the lanterns hanging from the Liberty Tree sculpture. This country s in good hands with young people like Audrey! Her message - "Liberty is the freedom to live your life in peace and happiness, with the people you love."

State Regent Lisa Parks stopped by the Bandbox Workshop at the MSSDAR Conference in Branson to share her excitement for having this hands-on activity on the conference schedule.

She won one of the Sarah Barton Murphy Chapter's bandboxes at the Southeast District meeting silent auction and asked the Chapter to share this craft with others at the MSSDAR Conference. Twenty participants created small 6" x 3" bandboxes to take home and share with their Chapters, families and friends.

The Sarah Barton Murphy Chapter was proud to host a hands-on bandbox workshop at the Missouri State Society DAR Conference in Branson, Missouri!

Twenty Missouri Daughters joined us to learn the art of creating traditional bandboxes—an American Heritage craft with roots in the 1800s. Using a three-part instructional series from the Cabin Crafts and Simple Living YouTube channel as our guide, participants carefully covered chipboard forms with beautiful decorative papers and stitched the components to form the box and lid.

Workshops like this bring history to life in a meaningful way. By learning these time-honored techniques firsthand, we continue to honor and preserve the craftsmanship and creativity of early Americans.

Thank you to everyone who participated—we hope you enjoyed the experience as much as we did!
