Yesterday, June 22, we celebrated the 27th anniversary of the Supreme Court's Olmstead v. Lois Curtis decision! In 1999, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in favor of co-plaintiffs Lois Curtis and Elaine Wilson. The court decided that the unnecessary institutionalization of people with disabilities is a violation of civil rights. The ruling called for state and local governments to develop more services and opportunities for disabled individuals and to provide these services โ€œin the most integrated setting appropriate to the needs of qualified individuals with disabilities.โ€ This was a landmark case that affirmed that people with disabilities are valuable members of their communities and that it is inhumane and discriminatory to shut disabled people away in institutions to access necessary healthcare.
