A new KSTP report highlights Minnesota's ongoing reading crisis as the state implements its READ Act—an effort focused on evidence-based reading instruction and ensuring students develop the foundational skills they need to succeed.

📚 The future looks different when you can read confidently.

Today we're celebrating Beyond Basics graduate Damari and just how far his journey has taken him! 🎓

Initially assessed at a 7th-grade reading level, Damari advanced to an 11th-grade level through Beyond Basics. Since then, he's pursued his expertise in masonry, built his own construction business, Brick Slayerz, and even attended the Forbes Under 30 Summit, where he connected with leaders from AOL and StockX.

Stories like his remind us that stronger reading skills don't just change what happens in the classroom—they can change the trajectory of a life.

📚 Sometimes, in order to go Beyond the Basics, we first need to go back to the basics.

A new article looks at the resurgence of phonics-based reading instruction across America—and the results states are seeing by returning to proven foundational literacy skills.

Mississippi's fourth graders, for example, climbed from 49th in reading in 2012 to 9th in 2024, progress the article attributes in large part to the state's return to phonics-based instruction. Other states are now adopting similar approaches.

At Beyond Basics, phonics has long been at the heart of our approach. Combined with diagnostic assessment and personalized one-on-one tutoring, we help students build the foundation they need to become proficient, confident readers.

🏈 Throwback to when Beyond Basics got DCLEATED!

Two years ago, our incredible cleat sculpture—created by local artist Jennifer Maples—was displayed in downtown Detroit as part of the DCLEATED project surrounding the NFL Draft.

The project brought together local artists and nonprofits to celebrate the strength, creativity, and spirit of Detroit, with our cleat ultimately helping raise support for Beyond Basics and our mission to change lives through literacy. 📚💙

As another football season approaches, we're proud to look back on this special moment—and we're ready to cheer on our Detroit Lions all season long! 🦁🏈
