Traverse City’s Grace Slocum Leads GAM Women’s Championship
Slocum didn’t hit her driver the way she would prefer, but her 3-wood picked up the slack off the tee, and she has the lead through the first round of the 35th GAM Women’s Championship presented by Carl’s Golfland.
The 19-year-old who just finished her first year on the University of Wisconsin golf team, shot a 3-under 69 at historic St. Clair Golf Club Monday, and led three golfers by three shots.
Kate Brody of Grand Blanc, her teammate at Wisconsin, Lily Bargamian of Grosse Ile and Oakland University, and Elise Fennell of Caledonia each shot 72 to open.
Logan Bentley of Addison and Oakland University, and Elayna Bowser of Dearborn, the recent GAM Women’s Mid-Amateur Champion, were next after shooting 73s.
The field plays the final-round on Tuesday to determine a champion.
“It was a pretty good day, but my driver was unfortunately not so good,” Slocum said. “I hit my (3-wood) pretty far, but with the driver I can get to par 5s in two. I wasn’t hitting it well, so on the back nine I just fully embraced the 3-wood off the tee, and I was able to hit a couple shots close and make a couple decent putts, too.”
She made a tap-in birdie on the par 5 13th hole after just missing an eagle putt and then birdied No. 17 with a 15-foot birdie putt.
