Neighborhoods are places where people connect with one another. Being part of a community where neighbors know each other and help each other out not only contributes to an individual’s health and happiness, but also makes it easier for people to organize around issues of public concern and community benefit. The Horace Mann Area Neighborhood Association wants neighborhoods to continue their stron
g roles in community problem solving and in ensuring quality public services. The Horace Mann Area Neighborhood Association’s perimeters are from the east side of North Broadway to the Red River and the north side of Seventh Avenue North to Fifteenth Avenue North. Horace Mann Elementary School, named after “the father of American Public Schools” is Fargo’s second oldest existing school and remains much the same aesthetically as it did on its opening day December 6, 1915. It still retains its beautiful terrazzo and maple floors, substantial oak woodwork, and large schoolyard taking up the entire block. Today, Horace Mann Elementary is handicapped accessible and contains all the up to date technology needed by modern students, yet retains the charm and class size often only found in years gone by or in that of a small town. The Horace Mann Area Neighborhood Association isn’t just for those living in the neighborhood. We invite and encourage anyone and everyone interested in helping preserve one of Fargo’s first and finest established neighborhoods to join our organization. There is a growing need to help preserve and protect the homes, parks, and school that were lived in and used by many of the original founders and builders of Fargo.
