Tucked away in New England is a forest that’s been collecting climate data for 30 years - and it’s changing what we thought we knew about trees.

At Howland Research Forest, Woodwell scientists work on 98-foot towers that sit above the old growth canopy and precisely track the forest’s breath. Other scientists work in the soil below to measure carbon exchange, record changes in temperature and moisture, and take tree inventories.

30 years of data show that despite the forest’s age, it actually takes up and stores more carbon each passing year.

🎙️ New Episode Drop!

When Dr. Samantha Ahdoot’s young son had to be taken to the emergency room due to heat illness, she knew she needed to pay more attention to climate change. Now, she’s helping families do that for their own kids.

As a pediatrician Dr. Ahdoot, talks with her patients and their families about climate change the same matter-of-fact way she talks about everything else — here’s what I know, here’s what we can do for your child. She says she faces very little pushback.

Even better, she says there is so much we can all be doing that would improve kids health now, and help shape a healthier climate future for everyone. From walking and biking more, to writing letters, planting trees, or getting plug-in solar panels, she has a long list of “just smart” win-wins.

This from .fiske shows that from grasslands to grazing lands, rangelands span over a quarter of Earth’s land surface and store vast amounts of carbon. We’re mapping them to unlock their potential as a natural climate solution.

Want to hear from a rangeland rancher himself? Listen to Episode 3 of which features modern-day cowboy Jim Howell and his ideas for climate action.
