When Kimberly A. Spuhler, 53, moved from New Jersey to Nantucket 30 years ago, she was in her 20s and eager to work. She found employment as a housekeeper, cleaning eight-bedroom mansions. After long days of physical labor, she often drank alcohol with friends and coworkers on the island. Later, after moving to Falmouth, co***ne, he**in and other illicit drugs became part of her life.

Addiction and illness eventually made holding down a job an insurmountable challenge. As a result, Spuhler has struggled with homelessness on and off since 2014.

Like many people in active addiction, Spuhler said she repeatedly refused help when it was offered by family members, police officers, sobriety programs and social service agencies. Despite those refusals, she said she is grateful that people continued to reach out. Last year, finally, she accepted assistance from the Duffy Health Center’s In From the Streets program. It was a long journey to get to where she is today, she said, but she is now nearly one year sober for the first time in decades.

The In From the Streets program operates across the Upper Cape. The program places up to 26 individuals experiencing homelessness in a Falmouth-area hotel, with 13 rooms reserved for participants. To maximize capacity, individuals who need a safe place to stay might share rooms. In the event of overflow, the Falmouth Service Center funds up to three additional rooms.
